My dd will not stop picking her scabs. Her legs and now her arms are covered in scabs and some are scarring. I have tried putting plasters on them but as soon as she's gone to school she takes them off and continues to pick. Her clothes and bed sheets constantly have blood on them. She has always picked at scabs but in the last 12 months it's got really bad. I have told her the scars will never go and when she is older she won't want to wear skirts etc because of the scars but she can't seem to stop. Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

I used to do that when I was her age. I was addicted to fiddling with the numerous scabs I acquired. I had less accidents and hence less scabs as I grew older and common sense took over. Didn't have any long term scars. Just talk to her about really trying to stop as the more she does it the more difficult it will be to stop. Could suggest a "carrot" to give her more reason to stop. "If you can leave them alone for three days you can win. .......If you can leave for a week....For a fortnight...... " Don't mean grandiose carrots but something modest which, perhaps, makes her feel grown up.
Sorry, not much help.

Thank you. I have had talks with her before. Will try again though and try a reward system. I did the same with my oldest DD biting her nails and that worked in the end. I guess these kind of habits are hard to stop. We had a wedding at the weekend and she had to wear tights with her dress even though it was really warm because her legs are so bad and she always wears trousers to school! I just really hope she doesn't end up with scars everywhere Hmm thank you x
