Teen cough and retching

My DD has had a cold and is now coughing when she wakes. This invariably leads to her gagging and bringing up a watery/flem like liquid. The doctor has given her an inhaler and said she has a very strong gag reflex. She is now panicking about being sick in school and wants to cancel her birthday sleepover. Is there anything I can do to help her? This cough and vomiting happens a couple if times a year b

I'm prone to hideous tickly coughs like that and I have been all my life. They're always the same. Whenever I get a cold and it turns into a cough, I get uncontrollable bouts of coughing which frequently make me retch and/or bring up phlegm/saliva. I can tell when an episode is about to start because I can literally feel my throat start to constrict a little. I can't stop it either. Water is no good because it comes straight back up. I just have to wait for it to pass, which is usually no more than 30-60 seconds. Afterwards I feel exhausted and my eyes are streaming!

I understand your DD's paranoia but it's not a massive deal. I used to suck cough sweets in class/assembly/exams if I had a cough and needed to stave it off. At work, I'd usually run to the bathroom/locker room to hack and retch in private Grin
