Tonsils and adenoids

We've just got a date for DS2 to have his tonsils and adenoids out. He'll be 21 months when he has it done.

He's having it done so young because he has sleep apnoea and tracheal tug. A sleep study showed his sats drop to 73% and he stops breathing 16 times an hour.

DS1 had his out when he was 3 (7 years ago) and it was done at our local hospital. This time it's being done at a bigger hospital as he may need ICU afterwards. The worry is his airway may swell and as he's so small it could cause a problem (they don't normally do it under 15kg and he's just over 10kg).

Has anyone had a child have this done so young? I'm so worried that it's going to go wrong Hmm Not to mention the fact that a) I can't really explain it to him and b) he can't tell me how he feels (he only has 1 word).

No, but I did meet someone the other day whose son had theirs done at 22 months old recently. It has made a major difference to his apnoea and glue ear problems, but six weeks later his snoring returned.

DSIL is a paed nurse and sees loads of them. She told me that they have to eat scratchy foods like crisps after the op to keep the scab on the tonsils from getting too big and cracking. That reduces the chance of bleeding after the op.

Dd2 is on the waiting list to have hers done, she is 2.5 and has apnoea, chest retractions and stridor when sleeping. Really worried about an op too, but may need to get it done as last winter she was admitted twice with SATs in the 60's.

Hi, just wanted to say I hope everything goes well. I have no experience of the procedure that you are facing but my daughter has had a few operations and its always scary.
It's good that they are putting things in place in case of complications.
You will be in the best place then if any specialist care is needed even though in a way planning for it probably makes it even more scary for you.
