DS vomiting - at what point should we do something?

Ds (age 9) has been throwing up since midnight. It was every hour but has been every half hour since early this afternoon. He's thrown up 22 times so far.

He's had tiny sips of rehydration liquid which come back up, we also stopped liquids to see if that would stop him being sick but it didn't work. He has wee'ed today, last time was early this afternoon. His skin still springs back, he has tears and he is awake and ok, just feeling very sorry for himself. He is vomiting liquid and foamy stuff, with tiny bits of brown streaks (but not 'coffee grounds').

How long do we give it before we worry? DH is less concerned than I.

Hmm - if he isn't keeping fluids down then he probably needs to be seen. Do you have an out of hours service in your area you could ring? The vomiting could be for a number of reasons. Personally I wouldn't stop liquids - real coke stirred flat with a spoon is generally more tolerable than rehydration fluid but as I aid, if her were mine I would be asking for advice. Hope he recovers soon.

if he is awake and ok i would just keep an eye on him

my son had to go into hospital for this but he was asleep, lethargic, floppy etc
would lift his head to vomit and then sleep instantly

These things tend to blow over pretty quickly.

I'd treat a 9 year old as I would an adult, give it a few days.

Do you suspect food poisoning or something? That can be nastier than a regular vomiting bug.

He has no other symptoms bar a headache. No one else (touches wood) is feeling poorly. He is awake, just sitting watching Vin a rather lacklustre way.
I just feel so sorry for him. Throwing up every 30mins is tough on his throat and stomach

My Nine year old D's is recovering from the same. Started Saturday morning and finished around tea time yesterday. He just kept sipping iced water and eventually started keeping it down. Some nasty bugs around at the moment. Hope your little one is better soon

Also, we were advised during his last sickness bug just to let him eat/drink whatever he wanted. If he was going to puke it back he'd puke it back whether it was rehydration fluid or milk. The flat coke seems to be the best thing though.

I'd keep going with the fluids - a teaspoon-full at a time, or sucking on an icecube, if he'd prefer?

If he starts showing signs of dehydration, go see someone.

Thanks all. We're going to see how it goes for a bit. Fluids aren't staying down, but are making the being sick less painful at least. DS is being stoical (which is a bit worrying tbh!). Wish us luck through the night.

Poor him. DD had this every 30 minutes and it lasted 4 days. That's the bad news. She was sick a couple of hundred times over the period. In the end it was just teaspoons of almost clear water.

The good news is, it was "just" a gastric bug. I took her to the dr on day 2 (where she threw up in the bin in the waiting room), spoke to the dr on the phone on day 3 and by day 4 NHS direct sent us an ambulance just because it had gone on for so long and they wanted her to be checked again. Almost as soon as we got to hosp she started getting better and was eating toast an hour after getting back!

She wasn't getting dehydrated even though she seemed to throw everything up - I just kept at it with the liquid. It was absolutely awful though - so I know how you are all feeling. In retrospect I should have taken her to A&E on day 3 - it's too long for a little person and they get very, very weak.

Don't stop the fluids. Jellies are a good source of fluid too. And when they do become able to tolerate fluids better, they need salt as well as sugar so flat coke or squash with some salt in it. Mine wouldn't take the rehydration things.

Try ice lollies, you don't vomit them up as I discovered when I had food poisoning.

Ta for the tips . Ds is fine now, thankfully. So far, no one else has had it . Will fiel away the info re jellies and ice lollies for next time .
