Reflux and infant gaviscon

My 5 week old Babba is suffering big time with reflux and colic to add to his poor misery. My doctor has just prescribed gravies on to help with reflux. Does this work? Has anybody tried this for their baby, please let me know???

We used this for both our children, ds had it the worst. It did help as it thickens the milk and makes it harder to 'reflux' back up. That combined with keeping him upright for a while after feeds.

Yes - doc gave it to my DC, really helped. Coincided with better sleep, too.

Yep - DS started this last Weds night. He slept from 830 until 4 am and has done every night since. We are no longer getting through hundreds of muslins and clothes every day and I don't mind letting others hold him knowing they probabaly won't be covered in sick now. He is much happier, lies down on his back and sleeps much easier, doesn't need to be help upright all the time and isn't sick regardless of what I do one or two hours after feeding. Really, really helped.

Yes it helped my ds, it can cause constipation so just watch out for that. Good luck.

If there is anything like eczema along with the vomiting then I would seriously consider milk allergy as a potential cause. Reflux is the diagnosis of first resort but often CMPI is underlying it. In which case a dairy-free diet for you (if BF) or a hydrolysed formula (if bottle feeding) might be needed.

Another possible cause is oversupply of milk if you're BF. This will settle down with time as your milk supply adjusts.

YY to constipation.

gaviscon was the wonder drug for us. before DO started taking it she'd dropped from the 75th percentile to the 9th due to all the puking. Once she started the gaviscon she began to gradually put on weight and now she's a perfectly healthy 1 yr old.

My DS was on Gaviscon for a month from 4 weeks old. It stopped the vomiting completely but he still had the acid reflux and some-not as much as before pain.
So then we used Ranitidine as well-it really has stopped the pain and endless screaming-8 hours of screaming weren't unusual..
But the Gaviscon really contispated him and wouldn't shift even with water/prune juice/corn syrup-tried everything. He herniated his belly button straining. So then switched from Gaviscon to Domperidone which works well. Still some vomiting but only a few tablespoons not a whole feed.
Watch out for the constipation as this aggrevates the reflux and ask for Domperidone if you need to. I had to get an a&e doc to prescribe it for DS in the end. My DS is now 5 months and still needs both medications.
