Persistent coughing

For weeks earlier in the year 3yr old dd coughed at night, nothing helped, we had a night in hospital for unrelated reasons and the staff there said it sounded nasty but not like asthma and that it was probably viral and would pass.
It didn't so we went to GP who with our histories on both sides agreed it may be asthma. He prescribed liquid ventolin before bed and for a while it helped.
However I think dd started to like the attention she was getting at night so played on it a bit. Now the cough has started up again and dh thinks she's putting a lot of it on in an attempt to get to sleep with daddy, never liked cuddling up with me in bed.
I've tried everything to help and I just don't know what to do! I have made another GP appointment but after 2 nights of little sleep and another few before we see him I'm at the end of my tether. Has anyone any ideas of what we can do?
