How long should I continue giving lactulose?

We recently started weaning with DS (6.5 months) and, as expected, this has had a dramatic effect on his bowels, culminating in a trip to the walk in centre on Monday for a prescription for glycerine suppositories and lactulose as the poor thing hadn't pooed for 10 days.

The suppository worked very effectively but he is still very windy and uncomfortable and is waking often at night with wind I think (he was previously a very good sleeper and had been sleeping through from 11-7 for the past few weeks). The prescription for lactulose didn't say how long we should continue to give it. He's had another poo since the suppository episode and I'm tempted to stop the lactulose as I think that's what's causing the wind.

Does anyone know how long lactulose is usually given for?

No idea sorry. Has his milk changed recently? How often are you offering solids?

No Jilted, he's ebf (not for want to trying to get him to take a bottle...)

I had been offering it 2-3 times a day depending on what was going on and not much at a time. The last two days I've cut back to once a day and veggies only. I think he was getting too much starchy stuff before.

I didn't give any today and he's seemed more comfortable so I will just keep it ready if things slow up again I think.

3 times is quite a lot at 6 months. The NHS recommend moving to 3 times between 8 and 9 months Smile

Have a read of this on kellymom and try to cut back on things like bananas, sweet potato and rice Smile

Oh and don't forget MN weaning discussions and weaning info.

Thanks Jilted :)
