1yo eating/drinking less, sleeping more

Hi,

We have just come abroad (been here a week now) and on the second day, 1yo DD developed a temperature but seemed OK in all other ways.

This then went away.

However, in the last few days, she seems to be sleeping more and also feeding is becoming an issue - whereas she would normally have two bottles of milk 7oz at start and end of day, some squash in the day and two snacks and one meal, she now doesn't drink more than a few ounces at a time, is very hard to feed (turns head away).

For example, today she woke at 7am and had 3.5oz of milk and a little later 0.5oz of squash. About a quarter of her normal porridge at breakfast and about half a yogurt pot (she normally wolfs down yogurt).

Apart from this, when she is awake, she seems happy, smiling, babbling away, loved being in the pool yesterday, etc.

As first time parents we're obviously worried when anything changes - so any advice would be welcome.

One other fact - 10 days ago her two top teeth came through; so I presumed the temperature earlier in the week was related to more teeth working their way through.

TIA!

I would give this some time. If her mood is normal and she's happy and engaged then it's unlikely to be anything immediately serious.

It's quite usual for my dd to go off food for a couple of days sometimes. It's also quite usual for her to go through sleepy days, we usually find it corresponds with a growth spurt.

It sounds like she's either had a bug or the teeth are bothering her. Both of these things would explain her being tired and not enjoying food.

Keep her hydrated and seek medical attention if you get really worried!

What milk is she on? Have you recently changed it with being abroad? Dd1 refused milk from around the time she hit 1, so since then we've had to just rely on yoghurt and cheese to get calcium into her. Two small fromage frais pots or a matchbox sized piece of cheese counts as an ounce of milk. You can also hide milk in puddings, cereal or cheese sauce.

Will she drink water? 1 year olds don't really need squash. And when you say 1 meal and 2 snacks how much food is that? 3 meals and 2 snacks at 1 would be more usual, especially if she's only having milk morning and evening.

Is it hot where you are? Maybe she's too hot to eat. Are her nappies wet? Offer her water or milk little and often if you're concerned about her fluid intake. All toddlers go through fussy phases, and have days where they barely eat, I'm sure it'll pass.
