Severe nappy rash

Our DS is a month old today and has had terrible nappy rash for over a week. It's two patches on his bum that are shiny red raw. It's also spreading out to be red all over. He screams in pain when he does a wee/poo and when we change nappies.
Have tried airing it-for a whole day recently. Sudocrem, Metanium, Bethapen etc. Only use cotton wool and water to clean and change his nappy as soon as he's done a poo.
He's a really big eater and has lots of dirty nappies so is really tricky.
Went to the docs on Monday and they prescribed Hydrocortisone but it's having no effect. I went as I wanted to rule out thrush.
What else can I do?? It's breaking my heart at every nappy change!

Could it be the actual nappys?

My dd is allergic to Sainsburys, Kiddicare and Tesco nappies.

I've tried Tescos, pampers and pampers sensitive so far...

My dd never had nappy rash until a fateful day when I stupidly brought a pack of Sainsburys own. She was so sore, I sobbed my eyes out.

Now I don't buy anything else but Asda.

Are you breast feeding ? If so squirt that on after washing . Works a treat .
Metanium is good . Welida calendula nappy cream is great once you have the soreness under control . Naty nature care nappies are brill .

Have tried the breastmilk thing just now..will look for those nappies tomorrow. Also just tried teatree and witch hazel cream which works for me so might help..

metanium but if not would go to the docs? In terms of nappies naty don't have the chemical gel stuff in them. Also some people find reusables better. Nappy free time is also good.

Metanium with a layer of sudocrem over the top used to work on dd when she had nappy rash

Could he be having a reaction to something new in your diet ( if you bf)? We found our DS was getting av sore bottom after he ate egg (he is on solids ) and when we stopped giving it to him the sore bums stopped.

Neal's Yard Baby barrier cream is the only thing that works for my DS. We have tried everything! You can buy it off of amazon, it is pricey but lasts for ages and is completely natural for your newborn.

I would go to the DR also, they may prescribe a stronger cream- use this alongside the Neal's cream (alternative nappy changes)

Also what I didn't realise is that you shouldn't just slap on the nappy cream. The Dr told me that it needs to be a very thin layer only, so you can still see the texture of the skin underneath. Blush I'd been slapping it on like it was going out of fashion!

Have tried the neals yard stuff, Metanium etc and have been to the doc-she prescribed hydrocortisone but it's worse-bleeding now.
Am going to go back tomorrow but I can't think what we haven't tried..
Really getting to me.

Canesten. Most nappy rash is thrush-related. My DS had exactly those symptoms, took him to GP and she diagnosed thrush - it cleared within a couple of days with Canesten.

Nappy rash is often caused by a fungus, similar to thrush, and is often characterised by a red shiny appearance. None of the creams so far will touch it, and your GP has not given you full advice. Speak to your HV, if you are not sure,but you need an anti-fungal cream like Daktarin ( can be bought over the counter) which is extremely safe for babies.

Please dont put breastmilk on it, the fungal microbes will feed on the sugar in breastmilk and may make the situation worse.
Breastmilk is good for a lot of skin conditions, but nappy rash is not one of them, especially if a fungal problem is suspected. Same goes for egg white, another old remedy.

hydrocortisone wouldnt treat thrush so if it was thrush it would need an anti-fungal cream e.g. canesten. You can also get a combined canesten/hydrocortisone cream that can be used for nappy rash.

I'd go back to the gp

Canesten is a good alternative, but in many areas the yeast infection is becoming resistant to it, so often daktarin is now suggested as a first treatment. X

DS has had nappy rash just like you describe several times. I got canesten prescribed by the GP and it cleared it up within a couple of days.

Not to say canesten won't work, as other have said. But some anti fungal need to be used.

Egg whites whipped up as if you are doing a meringue was what my mum suggested in a similar situation. I was sceptical to begin with but it seemed to work.

I was thinking it could be a fungal infection but surely the GP would have picked that up?

My GP once gave me Centraben emollient cream. It is very good stuff too. You can get it over the counter I think

Just went back to the doc and she's prescribed Timodine which is anti fungal as well as hydrocortisone I think. Hoping it'll work.

Thanks me too. Have changed to chemical free nappies-naty and also only cleaning with olive oil and no water. I think there's a tiny improvement today. Although he's still in pain at every nappy change.

Just to follow on - that sounds sense about fungal infection and so no to breast milk . But for general nappy care its awesome . Since we started using it her bum has been totally rash free .
