Constipated 14 month old

Not really sure what to do. My 14 month old son is going to the toilet almost every day, but he is really having to force it out. When he does go they're quite large, firm stools but are not dry. I can see he is in a lot of pain when going and it's also made him bleed a little.

He drinks plenty of fluids, and has lots of fruit and fibre and I've even tried diluting some prune juice for him to drink.

Being constipated is making him miserable, and I feel awful that I can't help him pass it easier. Does anyone please have any suggestions as to what I can try?

There are so many causes. My daughters suffered terribly , she's 18 months . I stopped buying formula a month ago she's now fully on cows milk and is so much better. I also give her tinned pairs for snack a tin Lasts 2 days. It's really sorted it out x

Our consultant who sees dd for
something else told us when dd was like this (at 2 and a half) to dilute her milk 50/50 milk and water. It worked after a few days.

ds1 was the same. cutting down on weetabix and bananas helped in our case!

It's strange, I can understand the bananas as they are binding, and he does have those quite often, but he also has weetabix for breakfast and that's high in fibre which I thought would help him go.

He hasn't been on formula since he turned 1 and only has a couple of oz's of cows milk before bed as that's all he is interested in having, but drinks plenty of water throughout the day. Spoke with the health visitor as she just recommended persisting with lots of fruit and diluted fruit juice and hopefully it we will see the positive effects of this within a few days!

The type of fibre makes a difference though. And if you have too much it can cause constipation. It's too do with it talking water from the body top be able to be digested

Oh I see. I've bought his some all Bran to try for breakfast in the morning. Maybe not such a good idea then?

DD had this at about this age. Gave her lactulose for 3 days and it sorted it and has not come back. Still no idea why it happened.

Ps obviously I tried loads of water, prunes, whole grains etc first. Didn't work, the lactulose did. (they need extra water while on lactulose btw as it works by pulling water into the bowel to soften the poo)

Porridge is a good source of the right kind of fibre. Kiwi fruit and grapes are both good too if not already eating them?
