Tongue tie

Hi,new to this! My 3 month old daughter has a tongue tie which GP feels theres no need to sort out unless she has a problem feeding. Im just wondering whether her tongue tie can or will result in speech problems? Or even maybe develop a lisp later on?

My 3 month old has had two tongue ties, which have been snipped, as they were impacting feeding. Do you know where the tongue tie is in the mouth as location can possibly make a difference when it comes to speech etc later on, so I have been told?

My ds had his tongue tie snipped twice under general anaesthetic aged 2 and 4. The muscles across the top of his tongue haven't formed properly and now there are sounds he cannot make properly. I really wish he had had it snipped as a baby and its something I will probably feel guilty for the rest of my life.

Thanks guys! Will speak to GP and try sorting it whilst shes still young. I'd rather avoid the general anaesthetic!! Also im not sure whether its her tongue tie stopping her from feeding and being fussy or her reflux hopefully GP will agree to snip it

I don't mean this to sound rude, so please excuse me if it does, but you need to be talking to someone with really sound experience of tongue tie and that's very likely not your GP. There is so much misunderstanding and misinformation about tongue tie and if you are having issues with feeding then you need to get it sorted.

My DS had a tongue tie snipped at 6 weeks and I was told afterwards that his tongue was virtually perfect and there was nothing else wrong. I knew differently but I finally got his posterior tongue tie (a second tie) snipped 6 weeks later after he plummeted on his growth chart and I was in constant agony feeding with a baby screaming in pain because he was only able to siphon off fore milk, which sent his poor tummy into free fall. I was told he had reflux, dairy intolerance and all sorts of things but, as it happens, pretty much everything seems to have been down to the tongue tie. I would suggest you Google for a lactation consultant in your area who snips ties and simply tell your doctor or health visitor to refer you to them. Failing that you could be referred to Southampton to Dr Griffiths or there is a hospital (might be Leeds but I can check that for you) in the North where there are experts in this field, if that is closer to you.

My overall recommendation to you would be to get this done now and only entertain conversation with someone who actually knows exactly what they are talking about.

My DD had a minor tongue tie that did not affect feeding or speech. It was recommended by GP that we look at it later if it caused a problem.

Eventually, her dentist was concerned that could affect the shape of her mouth and, before her braces were fitted, she had it snipped at the age of 13 by a dentist. It was done under local anaesthetic and it was pretty hard for her and difficult for me to watch. It is painful and I do not see how babies cannot feel the pain. It obviously needs a mouth/oral specialist to decide what should be done and when. DD was absolutely fine in the end and has perfect teeth and bite, but the tongue tie would, eventually, have affected her bite. Difficult at any age I think!
