Awful nappy rash - what do I do???

Just changed my little girl's nappy and she was crying almost hysterically. She'd pooed and all around her bum and vulva was red and angry looking and appears to have some tiny spots where she's bleeding. I haven't put her nappy back on or put any cream or anything on it because I don't know what to use that won't make it worse.

She started getting little spots about a month ago and they've gradually spread and got bigger. I assumed it was something to do with the fact that she's now eating food so her wee and poo will be changing too, but this is much, much worse.

I'm taking her to the baby clinic tomorrow, but I don't know what to do now or over night!

Any suggestions please?

Have you got any honey or chamomile tea? My two had horrendous nappy rash and both of those helped to soothe. You can use them together.

Make the tea, nice and strong, add honey, when tepid dip strips of muslin in and drape over rash. Leave nappy off as long feasible. When you put nappy back on, line with a tea and honey dampened rag.

Throw away the baby wipes for now.
This very minute change her nappy and fill the bathroom sink with warm water (not hot). Let her sit in it for a few minutes. Take her out, pat (don't rub) her bum dry.
Rub barrier cream on the area, Vaseline or sudocreme. New nappy. Keep doing that til it improves.
No wipes!!

Thank you, I'll give it a go. I don't have chamomile tea (yet! I'll get some tomorrow) but I do have honey.

She's happy as anything again now that she's just pottering around without her nappy, but she's keeping off her bum - just kneeling and crawling.

Try and get her outside bum free if you can. Plus metanium.

Yellow metanium cream, as soon as you can get to a pharmacy. No baby wipes, use cotton wool & water. If it still doesn't start to clear up after a couple of days, see a doctor, she may need canesten or something.

You can use honey by itself. Dilute in some cooled boiled water and apply. Agree that you want to keep away from wipes and anything chemical.

If you have porridge oats they can soothe too. Run a bath and make a big tea bag of oats in a sock/muslin/knotted tea towel. Place in bath until water is milky and silky feeling. Put child in bath. Pat dry.

Could be thrush, if so neem oil and udos probiotics (both should be in your health food shop) are amazing.

Ooh yes, fresh air. Put a big piece of fleece down, if you have carpet (cheap from a fabric shop, easy to wash). Nappy off, bare bum.

Had grim time with all 3 DCs.
No wipes as above - only if out and unavoidable.
Water and cotton wool.
Change nappy ASAP if poo. And regularly to ensure never soggy.
Lots of sudocrem at every nappy change.
Morhulin at first hint of nappy rash.
No bubble bath. (E45 bath bubbles and only v occasionally.)

Metanium is the business, if the baby has nappy rash, sudocrem or bepanthan just doesn't cut it. It cleared up my DD's nappy rash where other creams failed.

Yay to metanium, used it on my 4 dds, brilliant stuff. ESP for dd1 who was allergic to her urine....

If it goes red and shiny, it may be infected with thrush and you'll need cream from the gp.

Another vote for honey. Worked a treat on DD. That and fresh air when possible.

For really bad rash metanium was good. One or two days and it was fine. Great for teething rash

Agree with the advice about no wipes.

Metanium, small yellow tube, it's really good for nappy rash. Apply a thin almost transparent layer, then layer on Vaseline to create a barrier. Do this at bedtime.

Poor thing. Lavender and tea tree oil, a couple of drops in the bath is good too.

Wow, thanks all. I'll run her a bath now then try some honey and some metanium cream tomorrow once I can get out.

I have lavender and tea tree oils too, so I'll try them as well.

Those oils might sting a bit!

If you're breastfeeding mix some BM with the honey. Use unheated honey if you have it (rowse don't hear high they say, there are posher rawer ones from small producers, heather and Manuka both especially potent).

If you have raw coconut oil in the house it's anti-fungal and v v gentle.

If you use cloth nappies, use some without the waterproof cover when convenient, as you can tell as soon as she's peed then (line w stay-dry liner so it's not next to her skin).

If disposables, choose ones with natural/organic components and see if that makes a difference - I've seen pictures of chemical burns on Facebook apparently from the ones that rhyme with hampers, though I guess the middle gel bit must have somehow got in contact with the babies' skin. Or maybe they were allergic to something.

I'm not an expert on oils but I think you need to dilute them in a carrier oil like grapeseed or almond oil? Don't apply neat or it will burn her. Or drop some tea tree into her bath.

Corn flour has stopped DD nappy rash in its tracks every time it has started. Use like you would talc after every nappy change.

Also natty nappies are bleach free and worth changing to as very non irritating. Available at Sainsburys.

Yeah mix the oils in a spoonful of milk or vodka/similar and add to bath. ( disperses it )

Sounds like thrush/fungal nappy rash to me, if so you need an anti-fungal cream from pharmacy or GP, Metanium and sudacrem etc will not clear a fungal rash

my ds has got a bowel complaint (hirschsprungs disease) one of the side effects is severe nappy rash, we use Ilex cream and a layer of vaseline over the top. we buy the cream from oakmed medical supplies, it is amazing and the rash disappears within a couple of hours. we now use it every nappy change and it provides a barrier and reduces the risk of developing severe nappy rash. x
