Any experience with strabismus / crossing eyes??

My 18 month old has been crossing her left eye for a few weeks. It rolls in towards the center. It started out being just when she was tired but now she is doing it quite a bit. Her nursery career today told me that her balance seemed off but I haven't noticed that, and as she is 18 months she takes tumbles all of the time anyway. Her sight is fine as far as i can tell but she does rub her eyes a bit. Our GP has referred us to a paediatric opthamalogist but we can't get an appointment for a month, and I'm concerned as it seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of treatment did you have and was it effective?

my dd had a squint at 18 months too. It turned out that she was long sighted and needed glasses. She also had patching treatment as the squinting eye had poorer sight than the other eye. She still wears glasses now at age 10 (and always will given her glasses prescription).

DD had her appointments with an orthoptist at the hospital until about the age of 7 when she was discharged into the care of a local optician

Hi.
When you have the appointment, they will put drops in your daughters eyes and its very likely she will need glasses.

The glasses will help her eyes straighten out and/or reduce the squint.

They will then assess her a few weeks later and possibly give her a little patch over her non squinting eye - this will encourage her squinting eye to see better.

Many children who need glasses as children, don't need them as adults, but its important that they are seen as soon as possible as the visual system only develops properly if both eyes are seeing well.
