Movicol for 8 mo dd?

Dd3 has been constipated on and off since I started weaning her. We tried lactulose on advice from the pharmacist, and after a few days of that not working, the doctor gave us movicol.

The doc was one of those that talks too fast without listening and now I'm not sure how to adjust the dose. It's working a little bit, but the problem is not solved completely. The leaflet in the packet gives advice for 2-16, but not infants. I've been back to the hv today, she suggested asking the pharmacist, but there was a huge queue and dd was hungry.

Any experience out there that might help?

Hey, we had the same problem with our lg. We carried on giving her one a day and it just wasn't working then increased to two which still made no difference. When we saw her consultant in Oxford John Radcliffe hospital we mentioned this, and he said although the box doesn't state a dose for under 2's, they can have up to 6 sachets per day. We didn't realise, but he told us that Movicol isn't a laxative, all it does it draw extra water in to the bowel making the bowel movements easier for them, so you can't over dose on it. So maybe increase by one sachet at a time until you get the dosage right for your lo. He also said it is a good idea to add one into her water bottle so she was sipping it slowly throughout the day as well as her morning and evening sachet.

Thanks for sharing coffee monster, it's what I was thinking but it's nice to hear it confirmed. How long did it take you to get the balance right? I'm so regretting letting the hv fib me off and not going to the docs sooner.

That's ok, I understand how frustrating it can be watching them struggle and dr's not being helpful with their advice. I think we started on two a day and stuck with it for a few days, then when that didn't work we tried 3 for a few days and gradually increased it until we got a weeks worth or regular poo maybe one a day. Then stuck with that amount of sachets from then on. I guess around 7-10 days as 3 was what it took for our lg to go often and easily enough. But I recommend giving it a few days each time before giving an extra sachet as sometimes it does take a few days to get into the system properly to take effect how do you give it! it says to mix with water but we just added it to her milk and she didn't notice who was much easier than trying to syringe it all in.

Thanks again, very helpful. We've been using a syringe as I'm still bf and she's really rubbish with her cup(probably half the problem!). We've had some success today - I was out with my eldest at a party and DH text me! The things we get excited about these days! I don't think the problem is completely solved yet though, but at least we're headed in the right direction...

My 4 yr old is on movical and under local hospital for bowel problems, you must make sure that you are giving it in the correct amount of water. The sachets will not work without the required amount of water. Also make sure she is drinking plenty throughout the day.
