2 Year old vomiting every 5 days or so for a year

Help! Anyone else have this problem? My 2 year old vomits his whole stomach contents every 5-7 days. It can be triggered by anything or nothing, sometimes if he has a cough or if he is upset or if he laughs too much or sometimes just happens when he is happily playing or eating. No warning, he doesn't feel ill beforehand and is perfectly fine after. Have taken DS to docs but they keep fobbing me off with allergies, he does have a dairy allergy but we don't give him dairy. It's getting quite upsetting as when he 'pops' there is literally loads and he gets quite scared struggling to breathe as it all shoots out. Don't think docs are bothered as otherwise he is perfectly robust and healthy. Any thoughts?

Sounds bloody awful. D2 was / is a puker. Too much mucus or too many groups were his main triggers. Better now he's older. Suggestions off top of my head are: keep a diary of food, could it be a type of reflux that gaviscon might help with (baby powder sachets), abdominal migraine, cyclical vomiting. Not sure if a list is much use to you.

My dd (6) is going to see a paediatrician on Monday for this.

She is sick every few days out of the blue. Only a bit, say a mouthful but she doesn't know its going to happen.

She has little appetite, gets full quickly and has the scoots regularly. Also looks very pale.

I'd push for a referral to be honest.

Definitely get a gastro referral.

How strange. Almost sounds like it's physiological, to vomit so suddenly and with no warning. Hope you gets some answers because that's intolerable.

I'm following this with interest. My DS sounds very similar to your DD Mummytowillow. He's 5 and will vomit every few days. He doesn't bring much up, and isn't particularly bothered by it, but is v skinny and pale, with little interest in food. He also doesn't eat much, and eats from a very limited range of foods....

We're waiting on the results of some bloods done last week, so will post back once we get the results.

Thanks for joining in, it's good to talk it through it with others :)We have a specialist appt for March 10th so hoping they will investigate further. Have kept a diary of food but can't see anything that triggers it. Don't think it is reflux due to the amount, he literally empties whole stomach contents and Doc has tried tried Ranitidine, that doesn't make a difference either. Hope we all get some answers soon.

Hi following with interest, my Dd, also 2, is sick very easily, always with a bug and sometimes (every couple of weeks or so on average?) will also just randomly vomit for no apparent reason. Often but not always while coughing/ after eating. She has done it for ages, but I guess it seemed more normal in a baby. She is otherwise well has good appetite etc so not sure whether to be concerned. Let me know how you get on.

Just had another weekend of megapukes. This time with a terrible choking cough, not sure if it just a cough or if there is something causing a blockage. Cough seems to ease after a puke but then starts up again a few hours later. Roll on March 10th!
tholeon does your DD have any allergies?

Poor you, how rubbish. We all had a bug last week but Dd had it worst and was sick a few times. No significant allergies we know of, no, minor eczema.. She has always been very well, really, apart from the tendency to throw up! I have made a GP appointment tomorrow to discuss it. Hope you get some answers next Monday, please keep us posted.

Well that was a waste of time, Doctor says she doesn't know what is causing it but since he looks reasonably well she will not investigate further just yet. He has lost weight and has low iron but not enough for her to be worried! I'm worried! So we are back to being told it is probably just related to recurring viruses or a reflux problem again, we are doing 2 months of lots of Ranitidine and then back to the docs in May for a review. She was just so not bothered.

Ask for a second opinion!

I know I will have to. Looks like we might end up saving for a private consultation if they keep on refusing to do any further investigation. tholeon, how was your GP appt, any use ??

Has he always done it? Could it be stress-related in some way? If there doesn't seem to be any connection to a particular food or drink, maybe worth keeping the diary to see if it correlates with anything else - morning at nursery, argument with a sibling, battle over lunch? Abdominal migraine could also be a stress thing though I think with an abdominal migraine he would feel sick first. Sounds awful for both of you though, it is quite frightening being really sick and also grim to clean up. Does it ever happen at night/in his sleep? I would find that really worrying.

DS is also prone to vomit but he's only 15 months and he does do it a bit less than he used to so I am hoping he's growing out of it. With him it usually seems to be when he's slightly unwell - e.g. a cold or a bit of a temperature or lots of saliva from teething.

Hi kalidasa, no it just started when he was one and a bit and it is not related to stress, he is quite a laid back little thing. Luckily it has never happened when he is laying down, like you I am terrified of it happening when he is asleep! I don't think the doc understands the volume that comes out, it is like he has built up his food for the last few days, the other strange thing is it never ever smells of sick, it is just food mostly still recognisable. He was sick a few weeks back when he had chickenpox and that was a 'normal' amount and smelt of proper sick if you see what I mean, I wasn't worried by this as it seemed normal the other 'megapukes' do not.

Finally got a diagnosis, he has a hiatal hernia.
