How many wee's does your 3yo have a day?

Seems like a crazy question, but it was mentioned at ds1 nursery yesterday that they have never known a child to wee so much!

I've never really took much notice to how many wees he has per day
So today I'm counting, he is on number 7 already.

It's not like he just dribbles when he goes, it's a big wee.

He drinks fluid but I wouldn't say a massive amount, so far today he has had a small cup of milk, a cup of water with breakfast and a cup of juice with dinner

Should I be worried or does this seem completely normal?

My dd is the opposite. She does about two a day. Not sure what she does with all the liquid she drinks.

If nursery have noticed I would just get him checked by the GP. My three year old goes about five or six timeS at a guess as I've never really counted.

My son is 5 and has always had lots of wees. I kept a wee diary with times and amounts (he loved weeing in a jug) he was going around 15 - 20 times a day and after having a big drink would often go 3 or 4 times in the space of 30 mins. Around 7 times a day is normal for an adult.
Went to see a urologist who was very impressed with my wee diary! He ruled out a uti and scanned bladder and kidneys. He thought my DS was not emptying his bladder fully at each wee and that his bladder was contracting even though it wasn't full.
He has been prescribed tablets to stop the contractions and they have made a big difference in a few days. The idea is that after a few months he will stop the tablets and his bladder will have been trained to go less frequently.
Google over active bladder if you want to do a bit of reading, it's very common.

About 4-5 times a day on average I would say.

About 6 times over 12 hours and is just starting to be dry through the night too. It used to be more, but he seems to be able to hold larger quantities for longer recently.

If Nursery have commented that it was unusual it might be worth checking with your GP. He might have an infection, or an irritable bladder, or it might be normal for him.

This is unlike my DD who seems to hold on for as long as possible and seems to be at bursting point when she gives in to the urge!

Yes, best to take to GP to check. It is very unlikely anything serious, but I do know that frequent large wees can be a sign of diabetes.

I was worried about something similar recently and found some advice (can't remember where, sorry) that said up to 10 wees a day for children is normal.

DS2 is just 3 and only goes about 4 times a day and is dry all night. He has been at nursery since christmas and has never been to the toilet there despite being there for 3 hours every morning. He drinks a lot as well but has a very strong bladder.

He toilet trained himself day and night literally overnight as well...complete opposite to DS1 who was still wearing pull ups at night at 7.

bellablot · 01/02/2014 20:58

Is he not just interested in the toilets at nursery, are they a novelty? 7 times doesn't sound an awful lot to me.

BeaWheesht · 02/02/2014 01:25

Dd goes about 3/4 times usually. If she has blackcurrant she goes much more

lollipoppi · 02/02/2014 08:15

Thanks all, I wasn't remotely concerned until nursery raised it

He did 13 all together yesterday, he has an appt at the docs this week for something else so I might just mention it
