Urgent - allergic reaction advice - OAS celery

Hello

DS(8) school just rang to say he's accidentally eaten celery - to which is orally allergic. He is complaining of usual itchy mouth/lips/throat etc - and they've given standard 10mls antihistamine. His voice has gone hoarse too - although has been stood down from ep-pen from Consultant and thankfully not asthmatic.

Would you wait for anti histamines to kick in, or would hoarseness be enough to escalate? We have 4 tabs prednisolone for next line, but only had to give once years ago when he had full body reaction to tinned peaches (I kid you not).

Am hour and a half away at work and feel helpless and awful :(

Hope everything's ok. It sounds rather like my daughter's cashew nut reaction which has always settled within half an hour after antihistamine. But she's never been fully assessed ...

I would escalate it.

When my dD had swelling lips they asked if she had any hoarseness and seemed reassured she had not.

Hope it settles soon.

I would definitely give the prednisolone ASAP if airway affected at all

Thank you all - spoke to school and they said the anti hists had worked really quickly, but I'll see if he's showing any signs of flaring back up at pick up - if so will give another dose and the steroids

Cheers :)

Glad they helped..stressful for you!

Glad he is okay. Given how serious these type of allergies are, I would escalate if in any doubt at all. Even if it involves epipen, better once too often than risking too late a response I think.
