Silent reflux and infant gaviscon

Does anyone have experience of using gaviscon to treat silent reflux? My dd cries a lot, for hours at a time, and seems uncomfortable and in pain. I suspect it's silent reflux and my GP has prescribed gaviscon to treat it.

There is another thread currently on reflux. May help you to read it.
A couple of us said that in our experience gaviscon did not really help our DC.
You could give it a go and then go back to your GP if need be. I had to really fight to get my DD2's reflux diagnosis but once it was sorted it improved almost overnight!
I kept taking her to the childrens emergency dept at my local hospital. The last time, when we got the diagnosis, we were prescribed ranitidine and domperidone and never looked back.

If you are sering reflux sumptoms and gaviscon doesn't work, then do take DD back for further advice.

Also, Google Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance ( not lactose intolerance) and see if that rings bells. Almost identical symptoms to reflux.

seeing, not sering- sorry!

I was reluctant to use Gaviscon because I didnt think it would work, however it worked wonders- almost immediately.

DD doesnt need it now but in our experience it was a Godsend

tiredemma was yours silent reflux and what were the symptoms? Glad it worked for you. Would hate to use it long term though as I worry about damaging long term effects - however I guess if they're in pain/distressed, you need to take action. Find it hard weighing it up.

stick could you please send me a link to the thread as I can't find it? Would be great to have some support as I'm pulling my hair out and going a bit crazy with worry

ragusa I've been wondering about that as I've googled obsessively and saw cows milk intolerance but I gave up dairy yesterday and today she cried for hours and was really restless/upset. Maybe I didn't give up the dairy for long enough?

Yes, it was useless. Go back to the GP and ask for Ranitidine. It did work for us initially. You'll be given a low dose - keep going back until the symptoms abate. If you reach the top dose, ask for a peadatric referral to try omeprazole.

TheLittleFriend · 07/01/2014 21:28

OP you need to give up dairy for 2-3 weeks for it to have an effect

Stickhasgrownup · 07/01/2014 21:35

Its the thread below this one in children's health... reflux and sleep.
I didn't like the thought of long term meds but its so much better than your little one being in pain. Also you may be lucky like me and it may improve with weaning and so you can give up the meds.
I also had 2 friends when dd was little who had babies with dairy intolerance. They mentioned that with dd2 and said if it was the reflux meds wouldn't work. However they did so for me it wasn't.
