Penicillin allergy?

Back story.

2 weeks before Christmas, DS (13 months) was diagnosed with bilateral ear infection and given Amoxicillin. He took that for a week no probs, then he got 2 days or vomiting and loose stools and a viral type rash, saw the dr she said just a virus, ride it out.

Next day he got a really high temp that I couldn't keep down so went to OOH and was sent to PAU on the children's ward. He was seen and diagnosed with acute tonsillitis, they gave penicillin V for 10 days.

We're on day 6. Yesterday night he came up in a hives type rash and more of the viral type spots, they hives are coming and going, new ones appear but other go within a few hours so he only ever has about 10 at the most on him.

This evening his little cheeks are bright red, blotchy, and bumpy.

There is history of penicillin in the family, (DS's uncles) does this sound like an allergy, can it show after 5 days and a second dose?

Is it something I need to get checked out? Sad

My ds1' had the same, he was given it after a very bad reaction yo the mmr, Ffs. Me no clue mother. He had green poo for weeks, I would get help ASAP to get him off them and onto alternative. Oh and he he the rash, on top of the measles rash. Poor kid.

DC2 has penicillin allergy - the first reaction was just hives and appeared several days after finishing the antib's. GP misdiagnosed it as a virus. Second reaction was more serious - worse rash plus slight difficulty breathing. This time it was picked up and again it was after the course of meds had finished.

I've no idea whether your child's rash is an allergy or a virus but I would get it checked and the reaction can definitely occur after the meds are finished.

I hope it's not an allergy and that he's feeling better soon.

My son was diagnosed with this allergy and I was told it only really shows the second time they have taken it. Keep a close eye on him as my DS really swelled up in the end and was having trouble breathing by the time I got him to A&E. My DS started with the rash you describe.

I'm meant to give him another dose now so I'll keep a very close eye. Poor baby, he can't seem to catch a break health wise lately.

I had a very bad penicillin allergy aged about 10. I swelled up like a balloon and had huge, red hives that looked like they were full of liquid (I don't think they were. I was just swollen). I distinctly remember being so swollen my feet wouldn't fit in any of my shoes other than my big, furry slippers.

Don't give him another dose until you've seen a doctor

Too late! Confused

The rash keeps coming and going, it's not constant, I'll phone 111 for advice. Sad

My DD's penicillin allergy showed up on her second round of them as a viral type small spotty rash all over her trunk. Her cousin also has same allergy showed up after 3rd round of amoxicillin as sever hives all over her body. Think it can vary in type of reaction but defo runs in familes.

LadyFlumpalot · 07/01/2014 19:29

DO NOT GIVE ANOTHER DOSE. I am allergic to penicillin. Started off as hives which was discounted as a viral rash - the next time I was given it I went into anaphylaxis.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 07/01/2014 19:31

This is going to sound silly but the hives have gone now. I don't want to ring a dr to say he did have them but now they're gone. If he gets anymore I will take pictures.

He's not due another dose until midnight. I have him just in a nappy (it's warm don't worry!) so I'm watching like a hawk.

By gone I mean he gets 4 or 5 then a few hours later they go and then an hour later a few more appear.
