Antibiotics through breast-milk

I am taking amoxicillin for a perforated ear drum/ear infection picked up from my older son. My younger son (nearly one year old) still breast feeds through the night, so will take on some of the antibiotics with his feeds. I am generally concerned about antibiotic resistance. I am also concerned that should my younger son pick up this bug the symptoms might be masked by the small amounts of antibiotics that he has had. And finally, since we are always told that if someone takes antibiotics they should complete the course shouldn't this apply to my younger son too who apparently will be getting 0.25 - 0.5% of an infant dose from each dose I take for one week.
Would you be tempted to drop the night feeds? Or am I worrying unduly.
I do appreciate there are much bigger problems out there and apologise to anyone who is having them and stumbles across this. However, this is nagging away at me, I really appreciate anyone's thoughts.

I think you are worrying to much but ring the BFN Drugline, they know much more than me! Smile

possibly worrying a bit too much (but I'd be pondering the same!) my main worry though would be thrush (though I don't want to worry you.....!!) try to eat lots of live yoghurt (and lo too if old enough) and maybe even get some probiotics - think the main one is acidophillus (in yoghurt) but you could also give a little to lo too, just rub in mouth. I got some from Holland and B but then found biokult in boots. I'm not a hippy type but bloody hell I hate thrush!

lots of bf people also advocate coconut oil (also from h and B but I thing some supermarkets do too) as it's both anti fungal and antibacterial. can be put on skin, toast or on your nipples.

I agree with thrush - DS got this very quickly so

Lovepancakes · 06/01/2014 20:40

one to watch. thrush made my nipples really hurt!

darjeelingdarling · 06/01/2014 21:10

it felt like glass in my nipples and breast - hard to tell at first but then was horrendous.

hope you feel better soon Thanks
