We had a referal to the hospital last week for dd (9.5m) due to a blocked tear duct causing continious sticky eye. We have now been put on the waiting list to drain an open the tear duct under GA. The Dr eplained the op and I had also done some research so was pretty much prepared for what he was going to say. Just wondering if anyone has any exprience of the op at all?

Hi, my son had the op when he was 5 months old for both eyes, the problem was severe and no eye drops or massages could help before. I was not present in the theatre myself and did not know what was happening there, I takes about 20 minutes and it is a routine thing for experienced doctors. When they brought the baby out of the theatre and the effect of the GA started to fade my son was crying a lot and seemed to be in pain. I was in shock, but the doctor explained to me that this is a good thing and it means that he is awake and fine. I had to apply antibiotic eye drops for the swollen and bruised eyes and eyelids for 5 days and then took him for a check up. The problem was solved luckily, but I lost 5 kgs before the op: I was really nervous about it.
Very often the OP resolves the problem immediately, but sometimes needs to be repeated. Make sure you ask for full blood tests before the OP to minimise the risk of the GA. Good luck!
