Sick baby won't stay awake. Normal or worrying?

He is 7 months.
He has been ill for four days with high fever, wheeze etc.
I took him to A&E for wheeze last night. They said bronchiolytis and gave steroids and nebulisers.
He has been aero on me since 10am. If I our him down he cries but a tired cry and not totally awake. If I hold him he stays fast asleep and grumbles if I try and wake him but immediately goes back to sleep.

Is this a normal reaction to days with a high fever and disturbed nights or shld I take him to be seen again?

His wheeze is much better.

I don't like the sound of that, Boxofbugs. Has he fed today?

See what the consensus is on MN but I would probably phone 111 if I were you.

BunnyBaby · 30/12/2013 15:55

Trust your gut instinct, call your GP or take him to A&E for your peace of mind.

Boxofbugs · 30/12/2013 15:57

Sorry for terrible typing. Typing one handed on phone.

I am BFing and he initially fell asleep on the breast so fed then. I can sort of get him to latch on in his sleep but he hardly feeds as so sleepy.

I would go back to a&e. Like another poster says you need to trust your instincts

TanteRose · 30/12/2013 15:59

Yes, has he taken any milk or fluids? Babies can get dehydrated really quickly and it is dangerous.
Sleep is often the best cure for illness, but you should trust your instincts if you feel something is not right

Hhhmmmmm · 30/12/2013 15:59

I'd rather be called a fussy mum than regret not asking.

Marrow · 30/12/2013 16:01

I agree, he needs to be checked again. DS was like this as a newborn. He also had bronchiolitis and when we got to the hospital his oxygen levels were very low.

AnythingNotEverything · 30/12/2013 16:02

I'd call 111 at the very least. Being unwakable could be a sign he's getting worse.

It's best to check - no one will think you're being silly.

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2013 16:04

Agree with others to trust your instincts & get him checked again.

AyeWhySWIM · 30/12/2013 16:05

Better safe than sorry - we had a very similar situation recently with bronchiolitis and went to a&e 'just to be on the safe side' even though he wasn't dehydrated and we thought just sleeping it off. When they did observations his oxygen sats were dangerously low. You can never be too careful. Hope your baby is better very soon.

AngryBirdRoast · 30/12/2013 16:06

If he cannot be roused fairly easily then he needs to be seen SWIFTLY.

Please go now, Out of Hours or A&E. No one will mind with a baby that small, if it turns out to be nothing terrible.

I hope he is Ok.

Christmaspuddingaddict · 30/12/2013 16:06

I'd agree get him checked. Far better to waste a few minutes on what turns out to be nothing than to not get him checked and potentially miss something serious. Babies can go downhill so fast. On a more positive note they can bounce back just as fast. I hope he's OK.

AngryBirdRoast · 30/12/2013 16:07

Also it could be a sign of a serious systemic infection - does he have a high fever still?

Womnaleplus · 30/12/2013 16:07

Definitely get him seen again ASAP. I would go back to A&E personally. Difficult to rouse is a big warning sign in such a young baby.

leobear · 30/12/2013 16:07

Please please just take him to a and e now

Boxofbugs · 30/12/2013 16:09

Fever is 38.4.

Have called DH home so we can get him checked again.

I would go. I think 99% of the time when people are worried enough to post on MN asking for advice, their gut instinct that something isn't quite normal is right. Something is bugging you, and with a 7mo it is always worth checking out. Ring 111 first if you want, if A&E isn't easy to get to.

CunningAtBothEnds · 30/12/2013 16:10

hospital now, soubds worrying. I would consider an ambulance. hope all ok.

AngryBirdRoast · 30/12/2013 16:10

Yes you need to go back. How long will dh take?

JohnnyBarthes · 30/12/2013 16:13

Go. Meet your DH at the hospital if he's going to take any time at all - take a cab or call an ambulance.

cjel · 30/12/2013 16:18

Hope you are ok?x

tribpot · 30/12/2013 16:18

Yes, at minimum call 111 whilst you're waiting for DH, it can't hurt and it may speed things up at the hospital end.

WeAllHaveWings · 30/12/2013 16:19

ds had bronchiolitis when he was 13 months. Hospital kept him in for 6 days to monitor his oxygen as the levels were very low and his breathing was very laboured (tummy sucking in). During that time he mostly slept for the first 4-5 days and nurses gave him alternate doses of calpol/nurofen and I tried to get him to drink some water out of a syringe.

They didnt do anything apart from calpol/nurofen which we could have done at home, but we were kept in because we were told they can go downhill very quickly when that young. If you are unsure at all, go back in.

larrygrylls · 30/12/2013 16:21

Go now or call ambulance. His sats are prob v low and he needs urgent treatment. Don't wait for husband.

Boxofbugs · 30/12/2013 16:24

Thanks all. DH here in 10. Need him as have other children and no car. Got scared so splashed cold water on DS he did wake more than before and looked around etc but then rooted for breast so I put him on and he immediately dozed off again.
