DS keeps choking randomly, full on coughing, then stops breathing for a few seconds while going bright red and opening his mouth really wide before gasping for breath. It's terrifying but I've mentioned it to a midwife who said that he seems normal. I'm scared to even sleep in case he stops breathing. Surely this isn't normal?

Sometimes they get phlegmy because of the amniotic fluid which they've been swallowing in the womb. I take it you sit him up and forward when he's coughing?

I think you need to see a Dr soon tbh. Don't want to scare you but I don't think it's normal.

DaleyBump · 15/12/2013 19:12

Yeah, I sit him forwards and everything. Sometimes it's been up to 10 seconds before he starts breathing again.

It doesn't sound normal to me - I'd be going to the GP as a matter of urgency tomorrow.

DaleyBump · 15/12/2013 19:15

I'll do that, thank you.

I agree it doesn't sound normal. See if you can video an episode or two so you're less likely to be fobbed off.

We had this with dd2, was absolutely terrifying, the GP dx her with reflux and a tongue tie which mwqnt she was swallowing way too much air and then when it came up was causing her to choke.

There were two occasions when had I not been next to her I am in not doubt she wouldn't have cleared her airway. And I speak as a mum of an older dd with brain injury and seizures so I don't get panicked easily!

Dd2 got better once tongue tie was dealt with at eight weeks, ans gradually she has got less sicky but at sic months she can still gag very easily and often vomits.

Good lucj.

That actually sounds like what might be going on. He does have reflux and I struggle to get him to latch so I was suspecting tongue tie. He's also incredibly windy, farting and burping constantly. We were even up at hospital last night for him projectile vomiting. Thanks everyone :)

Go see a proper breastfeeding group, national breastfeeding network are my favourites but la leche league or nct also have groups.

It is frightening and I became very anxious and stopped going out as well. Ultimately that got us a TT referral faster because of increasing my risk of PND.
