Glasses - does my 7 year old really need them - advice needed

Hi my 7 year old has been wearing glasses for two years and I'm sorry to say I really hate them. We have battled to get him
To wear them but now he seems to want them on and is becoming more dependant on them. He had a lazy eye which is now ok and has the following prescription

Rt +0.5 2 cyl at 90
Lt + 0.5 1 cyl at 90

I constantly ask him if he can see better with his glasses and he has always said there is no difference
He is top of the class and very sporty and never seems bothered if he forgets to wear them
I have heard that I could be making his eyes worse by making him wear his glasses and I know he has been picked on because of them - if he really doesn't need them I want to throw them in the bin! I have had poor service right from the start at the nhs regarding his eye treatment - for a year he was given the wrong prescription! I wondered if anyone could give me advice
Thanks

I don't think any of us on here will be able to answer that without seeing your ds.

What I will say is I have glasses for driving. I don't put them on and think "oh I can see better". In fact, if you asked me, then I would not say that I can see better. However I do know that when I was doing the theory reaction test, I got much higher score when wearing the glasses, plus if I drive for a long time without them, I will get a headache.
So they obviously do make some difference.

Have you tried getting his eyes tested at a different optician?

Or maybe have him try not wearing them for a week and see what happens - if he gets headaches, or more tired and irritable, then he probably needs his glasses.

Like the poster above, I don't see a huge difference when I wear my glasses, but I do get more tired when I don't, so they are obviously doing something. At 7 I may not have noticed a difference at all.

I would take the advice of a qualified optician rather than an anonymous forum...

I would take him to a different optician and get a second professional opinion, if you can take him to EG Moorfields or other eye hosp so much the better.
