Regular grommets only usually stay in max 9 months. They are temporary measure to ventilate ear so glue can drain. In ideal world once they fall out hope is draining continues easily but for some the glue comes back and stays. They don't work for everyone.
Hearing aids can be really useful to get over temporary loss caused by glue. What's DCs thoughts on matter?
I've known younger children get aids for glue and they've all had positive experiences.
Is your dc suffering educationally from hearing loss?

I was told that grommets stay in about a year, they don't want them staying in longer as then the grommet hole takes longer/may not heal. Some don't stay in that long. A friend's child woke up 2 days later to see them both on the pillow next to her.

I was also told that glue ear usually has cleared by 10, it would be unusual to get grommets at 9yo for that reason round here.

When you had a hearing test after the grommets were first in, what was his hearing like? Ds, so far (waiting 3rd set of grommets currently age 6yo) has always come up with normal-good hearing at his grommet in tests, so they are hopeful when he gets over glue ear then he will have normal hearing. However they did say that sometimes glue ear hides a more permanent problem, which is why they check that.
