Really worried about 11mo DS

DS2 is 11 months and since about 6 months (when he started weaning) he's been having problems with constipation. Sometimes he's ok but most of the time he needs to be on lactulose.

He's been slowly slipping down the centiles for months now. When he was weighed mid September he was 19lb 3oz. When he was weighed last week he was 19lb 3ozSad The week before he'd had a sickness bug and barely eaten for days but even so, that can't be normal can it?

Getting food into him recently has been really hard. For the last few weeks he's basically just thrown everything on the floor. Very recently he's started to eat from a spoon (he'd always point blank refused before) so I'm managing to get some food into him that way but it's not much. He's bf and that's probably the only reason he's not really poorly right now. But bm alone is just not enough for him anymore.

In the last 2 weeks he's had what seems to be a reaction to food. The first time he had some minestrone soup and came up with a rash all around his mouth which lasted about an hour. The second time was a few days ago when the same happened but to a lesser extent after some fruit. Then today he had the same rash but under his chin after casserole.

He also just generally always looks tired.

I don't know if all these things (or any) are linked. He's having blood tests next week because of the constipation. Don't know if I should wait to see what they say or go back to the GP before that or not.

Sorry this is so long but I've been getting increasingly worried about him for a while now and the rash after eating (although he ate very little again) today is just the last straw.

Dd used to get a rash when weaning but she doesn't have any allergies, I think her skin was just very sensitive.

What centile was he on and where is he now?

Constipation will put him off his food...does he get enough fluids? How often does he breastfeed! Do you think he's filling up on milk?

Fwiw I wouldn't be too worried about food at this stage, really. At the minute the main thing is to let him feel food, play with it, get used to it and maybe, if he feels like it, eat some!

Try not to worry, maybe call your GP and ask about allergy testing at the same time as the other blood tests?

((hugs))

I would ask about allergy testing. DS has various food allergies (mild) and the rash round the mouth is his typical reaction.

I would also ask about allergy testing as it sounds a separate issue to the constipation. One of my friends dd is allergic to a lot of things and comes up in hives and blisters if she's touched by certain foods but got tested at the hospital and now knows what to avoid.

My ds has severe constipation caused by hirschsprungs disease since birth. Movicol is more effective than lactulose. How is he pooing now?

HHH3 · 22/11/2013 17:45

He's pooing ok at the moment but it seems to go in cycles.

He breastfeeds a lot but I try to make sure that he doesn't feed within an hour of having food. He's just had some dinner and ate hardly any of it but is now having a big feed.

He was born on 91st centile and stayed there until around 8 months. Is now below the 25th.

Will make an appt to ask about allergy testing but doubt I'll get that sorted before his blood tests.

if he had a tummy bug last week he'll have lost weight, they don't gain quickly at 19 months.

Some do just adjust down, the food throwing is normal ime.

pudseypie · 22/11/2013 21:13

I wouldn't worry too much about what and how much he's eating, my ds seemed to just graze on tiny amounts of food but he was the opposite as he started on 9th centile and is now on 95th for weight at 2 yrs. I didn't have a clue how he put the weight on as he never seemed to eat much. I would definitely get those rashes checked though as it sounds like what my friends dd went through till she got diagnosed with allergies. Maybe keep a food diary and note what food brings him out in rashes and how long after eating etc to show to doctor? And take photos of rash to show?
