Apple juice for diarreah (sp)?

DT2 has a horrible bug, took her to the doc who said it was viral and give her apple juice. She had a cup before bed and has been really ill since. My mum said its the worst advice she'd ever heard...we did it on doc's advice even though I thought it was odd at the time. Just wondered if anyone has heard this or is our locum completley barking? She is two by the way.

I've been told by the doctor before to give a constipated DS apple juice as it has laxative effects. Did the doc mean just get fluids into your dd?

Flat cola used to by my Mum's go-to if we were feeling poorly on her doctors suggestion. Sugar for energy, no fizz so no longer too acidic for teeth or tummy. You could swap it for flat lemonade if the caffeine bothers you.

Apple juice definitely makes diarrhoea worse but I have been told grated apple is meant to be good as well as white grape juice

avoid fruit juices but keep up other fluids.

I was advised apple juice as part of BRATS - banana, rice, apple juice, toast, soup. (this was when dh had dysentery!) Worked in that combo.

Apples are high in pectin, a gelling agent used to set jams, so yes, it probably would work to bind loose poo. Would make constipation worse though.

If she still has diarrhoea and vomiting then just concentrate on getting regular spoonfuls of water into her. Or flat coke or lemonade or lucozade. I think your dr gave you bad advice by the way.

No that's very wrong, apple juice is a laxative - & that came from an NHS dietician who we saw because of DDs IBS - turned out the only thing I was doing wrong was letting her drink apple juice in place if orange juice, which I had mistakenly thought was worse.

The doctor want a kick up the backside, your DM is right, very very bad advice for such a poorly DC

carb rich foods are best for diarrhoea e.g. pasta, potato, toast, rice, etc. Soup is also good. Keep up fluids but avoid fruit juices and fizzy juices

If she's not vomiting then lactose free milk ( Lactolite) will help bind her & milk is a great natural alternative to Diarolyte, much easier to get a small DC to drink - the lactose can be hard to digest even if not intolerant if ill like this

I also agree with the white carbs advice, but maybe avoid the pasta or white bread (wheat) until her stomach settles down

We use turmeric a lot with my DD is fantastic for the stomach, settles inflammation etc etc - I add a spoonful to the rice cooking water & let her eat the rice with it

never heard of lactolite but have seen Lactofree milk in the supermarkets

Dioralyte totally revived DS2 when he had viral gastroenteritis at a similar age. It was the only thing he kept down for days.
GP reassured me that as long as they're well hydrated food doesn't matter too much for up to a week.
Hope she's better soon.

Dioralyte is definitely the best, though I've never been able to get DD to take it & it is foul stuff, though the lemon is definitely the nicest

My GP reminded me that your body needs the tissue salts to hold the water in your body - so something like Diaralyte or milk is very important, because loss of the tissue salts actually perpetuates the diarreah

It does taste revolting but when DS2 was so sick he took sips of it when he wouldn't even entertain water, seemed to know it would do him good.

Even a few teaspoons full every 15 mins or so will make a difference.

Put a flavoured diorolyte in a fruit shoot bottle. They can sip it then and no change of it being knocked over. When my 2 are ill I just put the powder in the fruit shoot itself. They only ever get them when they are ill or on holiday so it is seen as a treat.

In the army they used to give my dad a spoon aof jam as the pectin and sugar was good for them.

Fruit shoot contains artificial sweeteners - they can cause diarreah - my own DD gets very ill with even the tiniest amount, so might not be the best idea -

though I think they do another more natural one in the same sort of bottle now, so that could work for kids that like them

Thanks all for your replies. Managed to syrine Dirylate into her but then she wanted water, lots of water, think she is on the mend but will be steering well clear of apple juice!

So glad I found this thread. DD has been soiling herself recently. Said that she didn't know she was needing. What's new? She has recently started drinking apple juice. Sounds like it's been a bit too much for her. Time to cut down the juice.

Sorry, I meant the sugary ones not the sweetner ones. I figure if they're pumping it out both ends over dose on suger can't hurt.

I agree apple juice is terrible device for diarrhoea. It's so full of sugar, it draws out the moisture from the gut by osmosis, which makes you even more dehydrated.

Agree sugar is no bad thing when they are dehydrated Merly but aren't Fruit Shoots one of the ones with the hidden sweeteners ? - I'm pretty sure they are & the reason why my DD can never have them

Pees me right off but a LOT of pops & squashes do this, have sweeteners & sugar in the non sugar free versions, even the ones labelled as no artificial colours or preservative can still have the soddin sweeteners in then voice of bitter experience we have to read the labels on everything & I would advise doing the same when dealing with diarreah - I presume it's because sweeteners are cheaper than sugar, it should be illegal, but it's sadly not

It's the high concentration of fructose to glucose thats in it barley that causes the problem, not the sugar per se, though fructose is of course fruit sugar, from what I was told at the hospital is the imbalance balance of the fruit sugar that means it can make diarreah worse or cause it if drank in large amounts
