Dd (2.3) is suffering from earache following a nasty cold. At the moment I'm using Calpol and Neurofen alternatively but she's just woken and won't settle, complaining of earache. I feel so bad for her, I remember suffering from earache as a child and just how painful it is. All I can do is walk up and down with her so she won't cry. Any suggestions to help relieve the pain in the meanwhile?

Has she seen the doctor? If not then I think you should give the out of hours GP a call and take their advice and probably get her seen.

If you suspect an ear infection take to oohs for antibiotics.

My dd has had lots and lots of them Sad sometimes putting her sore ear on a hot water bottle that was wrapped in a towel helped.

No, we haven't been to the doctors because I thought we were over the worst. She had a few days of high temperature and cold symptoms but recovered enough for me to send her back to nursery yesterday. And then started complaining of earache late this afternoon.

Thanks for the advice, I will try the hot water bottle if I can. She will will most like object as she does with everything at the minute.

A drop of slightly warmed olive oil can be soothing too. I usually heat a few drops in an egg cup inside a dish of hot water.

Its always the same with kids getting poorly on a friday night. If she doesn't pick up by tomos def take to oohs.

Unless it's really bad, or she has a history, it's unlikely to get antibiotics from oohs, so I wouldn't go.

Hot waterbottle helps, and I used to find with ds that taking him down and letting him sit on me and watch a (short) DVD, often helped him get sleepy. Sitting up can help, and he'd put his sore ear against me, which seems to help him.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We struggled until about 12:45 last night and had a relatively good night thereafter. She seems herself today so may be that the worst is over. I agree that holding her upright definitely helps.
