Stuffy nose relief for a newborn?

My baby is just over 1 week and has a cold Sad. His temperature is within the normal range and he doesn't appear distressed but he is snuffling a lot when he breathes. Can anyone recommend any tips for helping him to breathe more comfortably? Thanks!

You could try some drops of albos oil in a saucer of hot water on bedside table. Some people dab some on a hanky and tie it to side of cot. I'm not sure whst the min age on snuffle baby is, it's like Vicks vaporub for babies. If it's ok for newborns put some on his feet and add socks. Yes it sounds crazy, but my dd was coughing and hacking horribly last night, I quickly did the vaporub truck and she's slept all night.

Snufflebabe & olbas oil are only for babies over 3 months. Best thing for newborns is to get saline nasal drops from the chemist.

Maybe try Nasofed (sp?) nasal spray. It's just a salt water solution and it makes them sneeze, hopefully clearing their blocked nose.

Our dd was very snotty in the night when newborn although was told it was fluid in her sinuous from birth.

We were told to get a saline nasal spray which helped.

Now at 14wks we've had our first cold so we are using nasal spray, putting olbis oil on mattress at the top of crib, putting hot water with olbis under crib, putting baby Vicks on her chest, we have also had her in the bathroom whilst we shower as the steam helps clear their nose.

Also it's worse when she's laying down, so lots of sleeping in sling when it was bad during the day. And we've raised one end of her cot.

Hope some of them will help.

Thanks so much for your posts - really helpful Smile. We're going to give the nasal spray & hopefully that'll give my little boy some welcome relief from his snuffles xx

Hi I'm having the same problem!! My lb is 3wks and is so snuffly!! Snorts really bad too!! He doesn't have any other cold symptoms just the snuffling as if he's got loads of boogers!! He's always sneezed a lot but that just hasn't seemed to have helped?!! Will the nasal spray be best option? Thanks :-)

GinGinGin · 25/10/2013 16:43

The nasal spray is the only option for such a young baby Smile
