Unwell 4 year old- would you do anything different?

Hello

My 4 year old DD was sent home from Nursery on Thursday with a sore tummy and high temp (39 degrees)
Has been very teary and clingy over the weekend with temp hovering around 38 despite Calpol. Seemed a bit better yesterday, temp lower at 37 but hot again through the night.

Took to out of hours this morning as she was complaining about sore head and sore tummy and was well checked out, urine, temp (was ok) heart rate etc etc, diagnosed with a virus.

Since about 11am has had temp gradually increasing to 39 and has not reduced with Calpol. She is currently asleep. She's eaten nothing but has had a few drinks. Has wee'd pretty normally. She's stripped to vest and pants with a little window open.

I'm such a worrier, does that all sound routine

It sounds like you're doing all the right things :) is horrible when they're all isn't it. I hope she perks up soon.

have you tried ibuorofen if the calpol isnt keeping the temperature down?

The NHS website (as opposed to random scary websites!) tends to be good in terms of telling you which symptoms are ones to worry about and which are okay. I would do the same as you, just wondering if (children's) ibuprofen is an option in addition to the calpol?

As ilovepower says, you can use paracetamol and ibruprofen in tandem. DSis is a children's nurse and this is what they do in hospitals. The two medicines work in different was so it is safe. Use the normal dosages (can I suggest recording which you give when so you don't get confused)

Just checked NHS and it said don't do both at the same time.

I was nervous about giving ibuprofen as she's not eaten anything, I'll see what she is like when she wakes up and then that's another option.

It's so horrible, she is so miserable. I really appreciate the responses + the looking up of the NHS site too. That's very kind.

Well, she woke up after 2 hours sleep and temp is 39 still. Have encouraged her to eat 1 slice of dry bread and have given 5 ml of Ibuprofen.

Hope it takes the edge off, she is so miserable.

If your child is distressed and uncomfortable, try giving them paracetamol or ibuprofen. You can’t give them both at the same time, but if one doesn’t work you may want to try the other later. Always check the instructions on the bottle or packet to find out the correct dose and frequency for your child’s age.

I've just given the ibuprofen now. Will stick with the 2 hour gap before Calpol.

In my head I do know not to panic about a temperature, it's just hard to keep it all in context when you see their entire wee character just shutting down. Bring back the cheek!
