Question about squint correction surgery - I'm worried!

Hi there

DD got her squint operated on yesterday. She can open her eye quite well already and she still has a squint.

Should it look better straight after the surgery or do they take some time to "settle down"??

I am just really panicking that we have gone through all this pain / effort and so on and it's not worked. The thought of her having to have it done again is horrendous.

Does anyone know?

No idea but DD2 is being referred for surgery to have her squints fixed so bumping for you in the hope that someone who knows something will come along.

Watching with interest and this will be something I will now know to ask our consultant about...

Yes do ask. DH & I both been googling like crazy and that particular piece of info is just not there.

Her squint is as bad / maybe even worse looking than it was before. I know there is a risk of over/under correction but surely that would mean better but still off... If it's worse that's just a huge cock-up isn't it.

Sitting here feeling sad and worried. DD has no idea that it's not looking right, if it hasn't worked she will be so upset.

The hosp rang to check up on us, I asked about this, they are going to contact the doc and get back to us, so will update here when I find out the answer.

Is it the surgery where they tighten the muscles "just a bit but not too much"? it's a bit of guesswork then, and won't always work perfectly. I had that surgery & it worked well for me, but I can remember doc telling my parents it was a bit hit+miss in success. (wow, 40 yrs ago)

I imagine she'll get exercises to do at home to try to strengthen the muscles now.

I think they loosened one muscle and tightened another one.

I know it's hard to get perfect but it's the same / worse than it was before.

I did speak to the doc and she said to wait for it to settle down, and not to worry.

It is looking a bit less wonky today, but still pretty much as bad as it was before. However it's difficult to really see as she isn't opening her eye very wide today.

I think we just need to be patient and hope for the best.

I'm not medically qualified at all, so can't help you, sorry, just found the article. It also says that children sometimes need more than one operation, so perhaps perfection straight away isn't a likely result?

Are you able to speak to the surgeon on Monday? Try not to worry.

Hi im an eye specialist, it can take a long time for the eye to settle down.

Did her eye turn in? If so, they often leave it in a but as naturally with time it turns out after surgery therefore hopefully making it straight.

Thank you so much for posting. Yes her eye did turn in. I am going to just have to relax and wait and see. I am pleased from this thread that the answer isn't what I was worried it might be - that if it doesn't look straight now then that is how it will stay and it hasn't worked full stop.

So thank you everyone for your reassurance and information.

the good news is that she is not in any pain at all and is perky and fine - as she was yesterday too. So dysgu for someone in your position thinking about this the good news is that recovery seems to be very very quick.

I will try to remember to update in the coming weeks in case anyone is interested to see what happens

I had this surgery 3 times as a child. First it didn't work second it worked well but needed final go in my teens.

DH had squint correction surgery aged 6 but took several more years to settle fully and its still occasionally noticeable. His vision is fine though.

Oh xposts with more people!

I am quietly bracing myself for another op being needed but also hopeful that it will settle down and be much less noticable than it was before.

Only time will tell I guess but I'm not in a panic any more.
