DS2 is 17 days old. We were signed off by midwife on Monday, both in perfect health. He is 91st centile height and weight, breastfeeding going well and aside from a slight tongue tie, no issues with him whatsoever.
Yesterday when I was changing his nappy I noticed a kind of 'bump' at the very base of his spine, quite near anus (sorry if that's a bit TMI). I didn't think much of it at the time, toddler was clamouring for attention and then DS2 was hard to settle last night so then I was quite sleep deprived. Health visitor came out today to do his head to toe check and she too noticed the bump and pointed it out to me.
The bump is pretty small, probably only the size of a 5p coin. The skin around it is reddish, though not sure whether this is maybe just the general nappy area. It doesn't seem to hurt or annoy DS if we touch it and it is not an abrasion or anything.
HV just looked at his notes and said she would check him again at his 8 week appointment and see if it was still there. She really downplayed it so I didn't think too much of it either. I mentioned it to DH though when he came back from work and he (of course!) went on to Google and unearthed lots of alarming possibilities. A big one seems to be spina bifida, but surely this would have been picked up on the anomaly scan at 20 weeks or certainly at birth? I can't be completely certain but I'm pretty sure this only appeared or at least became large enough to notice yesterday, midwife certainly didn't comment on it last week or on Monday when we were being discharged. So that seems to me to make something like spina bifida less likely.
Did anyone else's DC have this? What did it turn out to be? What happened? I think I'm going to give GP a ring tomorrow - not convinced waiting til 8 weeks to see HV again is really the best idea... Thanks!
