bruised gum

Today my ds (8mo) face planted into the wood floor while crawling. He split his top lip with his 1 and only tooth, I cleaned the area with a clean wet cloth as it was bleeding, and gave him a teething ring from the freezer to try and lessen any swelling.

His lip looks pretty awful inside his mouth, although the outside of the lip is fine. but looking at him now, he's also really badly bruised the gum where his top tooth would be.

Anything I should do for this? He seems to be in more pain now than he was when he did it?

Thanks in advance.

Oh dear, that sounds nasty but so easily done. The trouble with mouths is that they bleed a lot so it always looks dreadful. Bruising is to be expected and it will look bad for a day or two. Mouths heal quickly as you should see an improvement in a day or so.

Bruising hurts just like if you have bruised yourself so that is why he seems worse now. You can give a dose of calpol and see if that helps. He may find feeding a bit uncomfortable while his mouth is sore and I would just give his favourites and very soft foods.

Hope that helps - it's horrible when things like this happen.

Thanks, I have just given some nurofen so hopefully that helps the discomfort. He's feeding ok for a little while then pulling off (I'm assuming when hes full enough that he won't put up with the discomfort anymore) which is not helping as he feeds to sleep Hmm

Poor little mite. This ones going to land me in a+e a lot, I can tell! He picked up a wasp last week, with predictable results.

DS1 2.10 face planted a concrete step last week, his tooth went through his lip and top gums were swollen and bruised
That was a week ago and it is absolutely fine now, the cut is healing nicely and bruising has gone
It's surprising how quickly the mouth heals

Thanks lolli DS is eating better today and the swelling has gone down and it looks a lot better today.
