Should I be worried?
He is 8 weeks old, exclusively breast fed, although was being topped up with formula weeks 2 to 6 as had some feeding issues. His feeding has improved hugely so now isn't having any formula at all. Lots of wet nappies. Saw HV on Wednesday who suggested tummy massage, have tried that but still nothing Confused

is he crying or in pain, trying to poo but not being able to? If so, then I would be thinking a blockage and take him to OOHs to get checked out. If he isn't then keep trying with the massage and dr's on Monday.

In an exclusively breastfed baby they say that anything from 10 times a day to once every 10 days is normal.

Novia · 17/08/2013 08:52

Hiya - dont worry, very normal for a BF baby (my nephew went 21 days which was a bit excessive!) My DD is 20 weeks now, and until recently only had 1 poo per week. Believe me, you'll miss is when it goes back to 5 per day! ;)

Forgetfulmog · 17/08/2013 09:13

If he's in pain you could try a couple of teaspoons of cooled boiled water a few times a day, but be careful as too much water can upset his tummy.

Keep trying the massage & bring his knees up to his chest as well. He might have trapped wind, which could be blocking the poo & massage will help.

I remember panicing too as my ds often went 5-10 days between poo's. I was assured that it is normal in breastfed babies.

FriskyHenderson · 17/08/2013 09:43

Just don't leave the house, because when it finally comes there will be no stopping it. It'll be two changes of clothes and bath for DC and you [bitter experience]

lljkk · 17/08/2013 09:44

lol, normal, but expect an overflow when it happens.

cherrylola · 17/08/2013 10:00

Thanks for putting my mind at ease ladies! He doesn't seem to be in pain but is doing some very stinky farts so hopefully all is well and it is just down to stopping the formula x

I'm not really looking forward to it now after the poo-splosion stories!!

yep, totally normal. my DD was referred to hosp. for this as she was going 14-21 days between poos at that age and Pead. consultant said it was because Bf milk contains virtually no waste so not to worry. Literally the day I changed to formula (about 5 months) she was a one a day girl! Same for my ds two years later! But yes, expect explosions, two person changing job and baths when it does happen, I used to live in fear of swimming lessons!

cherrylola · 18/08/2013 08:46

The poo has landed! Wink
It wasn't even that bad, no explosion thank gawd!

Glad it wasnt too bad. I had forgotten all about those days until I saw ur post. It soon changed when he started solid foods at 6 month.
