Spot under armpit - big, red, inflamed

Any ideas?

My 4 year old DS has one spot under his arm. It looked like a bite at first (noticed it Tuesday night) but has got redder and looks very sore. Have been waiting to see if any more develop, but so far nothing.

Is it just a zit, or should I be worried?

Could be the start of chicken pox so keep an eye out for more.

It does look like the pox but he has had it - can he get it twice?

it could also be the start of shingles if he gets more in the same area

Have you checked out molluscum?

I am crossing my fingers it is not molluscum. It is bigger than I thought molluscum would be, and there is only one.

We had been swimming the day before I spotted it. How quickly does molluscum come up?

molluscum tends to start small and then grow bigger before spreading. They are normally skin coloured too and look a bit like warts.

This started out red -like a bite - and is now red with a whitish head.

It could be a blocked sweat gland that has become infected.

Let your GP/receptionist know that you are concerned it could be chicken pox or shingles. They can then take measures to protect any immuno suppressed patients in the waiting room (my child has cancer and the times I have had a phone call after a visit to GP or hospital to say there was a case of chicken pox or shingles in the waiting room - both of which could be devastating for my son).

Good point, Min - when he had impetigo, we waited in a isolation room.

Still just the one spot. Maybe it is a bite and I will look stupid for going.
