2yo ill on a monthly basis - is this normal?

Since the turn of the year DS has had a bug every month. Sometimes sickness, sometimes coughing, always diarrhoea, usually temps in excess of 38 degrees. And he takes at least a week to recover from each one.

He goes to nursery one day a week and we regularly go to soft play and toddler groups, so lots of places he can pick things up. He was 2 in April.

Is this normal?

It's not normal all year round.

Feb 1st - cold and slight temperature
Feb 15th - Very high temp (over 39)
Feb 21st - vomiting and diarrhoea
April 3rd - diarrhoea
April 19th - vomiting and diarrhoea
May 5th - coughing, croup, high temp and conjunctivitis
June 11th - High temp and diarrhoea
July 22nd - High temp

That's the day the things started. Looks pretty grim written down there.

I wouldn't say that is THAT much out with the realms of normal tbh sometimes you just get a run like that. A couple of years ago ds had swine flu, pneumonia, sick bug 3 time, chest infection twice, ear infection twice, slapped cheek and chickenpox. Oh and a mouth full of 50+ ulcers. It was he'll but I think his immune system had just taken a battering.

That said if you're worried see the GP. Is he growing and developing normally? What's his diet like?

That would have been really bad compared with dd1, but she didn't go to nursery.
Dd2 had slightly less in the summer, but about the same in the winter-although her temperatures were usually over 40degrees. She does things well when she does them.
I'd have been thrilled if that was ds age 2yo. he didn't go to nursery either, but had bugs from 2 schools courtesy of his two sisters. I threatened to camp in the doctors when he was 21 months-I'd been in more often than twice a week with him for the last 6 weeks.

None of them have any major health issues. Ds gets ear infections, but that's it. The only one who's really had a health scare was dd1 who had cronic pneumonia when she was 8yo and was really ill, and then picked up bugs for the next 6 months regularly.

He eats well and healthily. Very few sweets. Only drinks milk and water. Doesn't like veg but loves fruit and meat. He's about 50-75th centile for height and 75th-91st for weight. He's very active and sleeps well when not ill.

He's also got eczema and had some unexplained rashes earlier this year which we are getting an allergy clinic referral for. Oh, and he has mild toddler diarrhoea separate to all of the illnesses so rarely has formed poos. Maybe once a fortnight.

At the back of my mind I worry that stopping BF in December has caused this. Before then he was ill about once every 4-6 months.

I thought the years between 2 and 3 were meant to be the worst years for illnesses. Dd was constantly ill from September to end of April during that time

Sounds like it's not too out of the ordinary actually.

He'll be picking up all sorts from nursery and toddler groups and building up his immune system. Between 2 and 3 seems to be the age that some kids have a permanently snotty nose. Doesn't seem too out of the ordinary.

Some children catch everything going. Some are just really sickly. Some are never sick.
My 2 ds's are never sick. Each ds has had, on average, 2 or 3 days off sick, either from school or nursery, every year for the last 4 years, it has been the same.
I take no credit for this. Is pure luck. At Christmas, it was flu, after sickness bug, after cough, after cold, after ...... Kids were off for weeks at a time. Mine caught not a single thing.
One of those things.

Is he definitely ok with cows milk? Just you say that he's been more unwell since stopping bf, milk and products are also one to cut out if your lo has an upset stomach, ds1 had toddler diahorrea (and would still have) when on milk, just something to throw into mix
Not sure if its 'normal' or not, my only advise would be good multi vit and extra vit c (bio care do good range) and probiotics to build his immune system back up (again bio are do a children's one) and hope he's on mend soon x
