3yo suddenly itchy and puffy eyes - help!

Hi all, we arrived at my DH's granddad's house in Sussex tonight at about 7.30 for a holiday. DD was running around the garden and then ate a bit of tea before suddenly getting very scratchy and hot. Her eyes have puffed up and she has marks that look like nettle stings all over her torso. She would have said if she'd been stung. Any ideas?? She's gone to bed now but is very uncomfortable. Breathing is fine. Should I panic or wait and see how she is in the morning?

Sounds like an allergic reaction/hayfever.

I am sure someone with more knowledge will come along to help you soon.

piriton (or other antihistamine).

Thanks - I don't have any piriton here but could go out and get some. I was just do surprised at the speed it came on - from nothing to eyes almost closed in 5 minutes.

Yes it sounds like an allergic reaction. Did she eat anything unusual to her or are their any animals she is not used to?

Make sure her mouth and her tongue are not swollen and her breathing is normal.

I dont mean to sound alarmist but dd is peanut allergic and it really is better to check these things if you suspect an allergy.

If you can, I would go out and get some. Just to make her more comfortable sooner rather than later than anything else.

If my child was a you describe I'd go out and get some antihistamine.

She had sausages and chips (very normal to her!) and there are cats in the house, which we don't have at home, but she has been around them before and no problems. Wondering if there is some different pollen around to at home.

Piriton as others have said. If she is sleeping soundly then breathing likely
to be okay. If she says her mouth feels weird or lips swell give more piriton and get her to a and e.

Just be aware that if a first reaction was this quick and fairly severe then she may be in for rough ride over next few days. Consider giving her some piriton and/or piriteze to help reduce impact before she gets bad.

Hope she's ok. My 11 year old does this regularly!

Hi, thanks all for your concern. I got some piriton but as she was sleeping soundly I haven't woken her to give any. I've checked on her and swelling and blotches have gone down. Would I be right in thinking that any allergy to something airborne wouldn't have calmed down like this, as she is in a room with open windows? Is it more likely to be something she touched / ate?

I'll be watching her very closely in the morning and following her round with the piriton (up feeding DD2 at the mo!)

Hi, she's awake now, and one of her eyes is still very puffy - she looks like a boxer! All skin reaction has gone and she is fine in herself but I'm going to ask a pharmacist later.

Had she used a new sun cream? We thought ds was allergic to sun cream but it was actually almond oil in the cream which gave him a sudden reaction like you describe.

It could well be that she's had an allergic reaction. If this is the case, it could be worse next time, do personally I would get her checked out by the doctor. If he/she is concerned, they can send her for allergy testing.

Just to update, I didn't give her piriton this morning as what I thought was children's was in fact adult... But I took her to a pharmacist who said it looked like hay fever. All the symptoms pointed to this. She suggested loratadine (sp?) which brought the swelling in her eyes down really quickly. Will keep an eye on her over the next week. Thanks for all your help!
