Should I get the antibiotics?

My DD was sent home from school yesterday with sore ear, high temp and she had pretty much collapsed in the playground, saying she was cold.

I took her to Dr's who said she had a bulging eardrum, likely to burst, and caused from a middle ear infection most likely related to the cold she had a couple of weeks ago.

Her temp was staying at over 39 c after calprofen and calpol and only went down after several hours and a few doses.

She slept well, and woke up quite early saying her ear was beating, and there was a lump of wax on the outside of her ear. She has a temp again this morning.

The Dr gave me a prescription for AB's for her if I felt she needed them - if worse or not any better in 24hrs.

That was yesterday afternoon, and I am torn between getting them for her this morning as still unwell (although not floppy like yesterday) or just treating with calpol/calprofen.

She has never had AB's before.

Sorry it is long winded!

if it were me I would, hope your dd feels better soon Smile

I agree, I would if it were me too. Hope she feels better soon - earache is horrible.

My dd suffered terribly with ear infections, I would definitely get the antibiotics if she's still in pain today. If you're seeing a large amount of ear wax outside the ear today, it's possible that her ear drum has perforated... its not a huge deal but worth finding out at the GP as you might want to limit water getting in the ear (swimming, dunking in the bath) if it has perforated. The only good news about a perforated drum is that it does release the pressure so it hurts less. I hope she feels better soon.

As a person who has just had an ear infection last week, please give her the antibiotics. I tried all manner of over the counter drugs but they barely touched the sides. Its agony. Got antibiotics and even after first day i felt so muxh better and happier. Dont let someone go through this its torture!
May sound over dramatic but the pain is still vivid in memory Sad

Thank you all.

She is much better today, but I spoke to the pharmacist at Boots who said that it was definitely worth giving the AB's, so she has had one dose - not impressed with the 'banana' flavour!

Yes most definitely give them to her and don't forget that now you have started the course she must finish it even if she send tons better.

Ear ache is awfulSad

valiumredhead · 09/07/2013 12:04

Seems not send

MrsNouveauRichards · 09/07/2013 12:11

I was just unsure about giving them to her as the Dr hadn't said definitely, more if I thought she needed them.

While it is nice to be part of the decision, sometimes it is easier to be told!

Oh, and I asked the pharmacist about swimming and she said I should keep her off swimming until she finishes the AB's then see the Dr again to make sure all has healed and maybe get ear plugs if necessary - a perforated ear drum can take up to 8weeks to heal, and that is the whole summer!

I think it has burst. Her ear is dripping yellow/clear liquid, but it doesn't hurt anymore. Managed to get the 3x doses of AB's in though, so hopefully all will clear up soon.

I remember when mine burst, it was instant relief!

ZipItShrimpy · 10/07/2013 14:36

I would. I took my dd to the ooh with an ear infection last year and they said her eardrum had perforated and it would improve.

24 hours later, after being slightly better during the day, she was literally screaming in agony (new years eve!) and was inconsolable. It was hideous.

I wouldn't mess about with ears again.

hazeyjane · 10/07/2013 14:41

Hope it gets better soon (just a reminder to definitely finish the course!!)
