Impacted stool

My dd was prescribed lactolose for constipation. The doctor felt and pressed her stomach and said she could tell there are stools in there. Would a doctor be able to tell by pressing on the stomach? Thanks for your help.

Yes, they would.

Yes, you can feel a bowel full of poo from the outside.

Yes they would, this has happened to dd a few times (long story) have they prescribed anything? suppository? please get help asap. Dd ended up having to have a micro enema in the end :(

Yes they would. Lactulose is no good for impaction. You need paediatric movicol.

She needs to take lactulose and then a follow up appointment in two weeks time. What I don't understand is that my dd has been going to the toilet daily or every other day. She does strain sometimes but her stools are not little marbles. Will lactulose helps at all?

You can have very runny stools but still have constipation.

Lactulose bulks out the stool and makes it softer and easier to pass. It doesn't make you 'go' in the way a laxative would. It is important to make sure she drinks plenty while she is taking it.

Thanks, I think she is only mildly constipated. She hasn't got any leaky stools at all, just an occasional large stool that is painful to pass!

Lactulose softens the stool, you need to make sure she's drinking plenty, the more she drinks the better it works.
