Tonsilitis - does she need anti-biotics?

My DD is five and has been unwell for four days. The first three days she had a high temp and neck ache and sore throat but today has no temperature and seems fine though she has 'a bit of a sore throat'. She has/had all the symptoms of tonsilitis including white pus spots all over her tonsils and foul breath.

According to the NHS site even if she has a bacterial infection (tonsilitis can be viral or bacterial apparantly) and the only way to tell is by taking a swab they still don't recommend anti-biotics unless it goes on for a long time.

So am I doing the right thing by waiting for her body to fight it off or should she be seing a doctor?

if that's really what NHS advice says then I would wait it out.
When DS had tonsillitus he was wiped out completely.

Yes the last two days she has slept and nothing else. Also temp was 39. But today she seems fine although still has pus on her tonsils.

Hard to know what to do?

Definitely let her body cope with it unless things worsen or she develops a rash. My son had repeated horrible bouts of tonsillitis with high fevers. My gp advised to let him fight it off, and although he was very unwell, he recovered and never had it again. Tbh I would not do it again, as looking back, he was terribly unwell Shock

I was going to post the same thing! My 5yo dd has has a bad throat since Thursday. She was sent home from school on Friday with a temperature and now has white spots on her swollen tonsils.

A lot of children in reception have it at the moment. I was going to take her to the doctors tomorrows but have read that if they have no temperature and feel ok they can go to school?

Are you keeping your dd home until the spots have gone?
