Hope someone can advise asap. I've accidently bought piriteze for ages 6+ and DS 4.8 has very itchy eyes and is snuffly. I'd really like to give him something to ease the symptoms but it says don't use for children under 6. Do you think a half dose would be ok or too risky? Thanks.

I'd give a dose with no worries

Is there any extra warning on the pack? (for example we recently accidentally bought adult bonjela when 13yo DD had her brace fitted and there was a very specific warning on there about only giving to over 16s and it explained about the ingredients and a link to Reyes Syndrome, liver failure etc)

NorbertDentressangle · 19/06/2013 19:05

Sorry, not saying it would cause that but what I meant was there might be a specific ingredient that would mean it wouldn't be suitable and could be dangerous IYSWIM

CajaDeLaMemoria · 19/06/2013 19:06

No.

I can't remember why it is over 6s only but I know that it's serious. They wanted to merge the recipes a while ago but the FDA declined due to the risks to under 6s.

I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for being so quick! No extra warnings, no, so prob just a precaution then?

Sorry x-posted with a couple of you. Maybe not worth the risk then, he can live with a bit of irritation. Thanks so much.

Piriton is fine for any child over 1. Piriteze contains a totally different drug which I don't think has been fully tested in younger children.

Patient.co.uk says cetirizine is not suitable for children under the age of 2 but it doesn't say why. It makes no mention of being unsuitable for under 6yrs old. Info here

Thank you all. I've just tracked down a friend who had some suitable for under 6's so am borrowing that rather than worry. Will see if I can exchange mine tomorrow. Can't believe how speedy you've all been with the replies, it's brilliant!
