Impaction

DS has had soiling issues for a while. We saw the GP, who prescribed one sachet of movicol a day and to come back in a month. It got no better. GP suspects impaction. He had to have 4 sachets the first day, then increase by two a day until he passed the blockage, then back down to two sachets maintenance level. We go back in a fortnight. DS has had two large BM, but they were soft. Since then, he has been (sorry) pooing ribbons of very soft stool, or out and out diarrhoea. Tomorrow, he'll be on the maximum dose of 12 sachets. He says he still feels blocked up. Has anyone else dealt with this in their child? Will I definitely know that the blockage has gone? He still has tummy pains, feels a bit sick etc.

My ds suffered from this and was prescribed movicol, we increased by 2 sachets a day and only got to six(so three days) and we knew it had cleared. It was very clear it had cleared!

He has suffered one reoccurrence since and again it cleared dramatically, this time with 4 sachets. Now seems to be managing.

Gross, sorry, but...was the impaction poo different? Or was it just the volume that gave it away? DS has had several leakage issues today, he seems to have no control whatsoever, and the thin soft stools made me think it was overflow. But I'm not a poo expert (honest).

What came away was soft but not liquid but and the amount that came away told me it wAsnt the leakage.

My gp did say it wAsnt going to be a quick fix but ds has only had two weeks worth of movicol on seperate occasions, he does lots of poos now, 2 or three a day. They aren't really soft but he has no problem passing them thankfully.

Maybe the leakage is the movicol starting to work??
The last time ds had some he had to be bathed afterwards, it filled not only his nappy but his trousers too.

My ds is only two though, I tried colic exercises to try and free things up too

Has he had an abdominal Xray?

If not, he should. then at least you will know whether there is a blockage of impacted faeces.

No xray. The doc has diagnosed impaction based on his history and symptoms. Poor little guy is knackered.

I think an Xray would be the best thing to sort out whether he is still impacted. It is quick, easy and painless to do.

He may need something like docusate to break up the blockage.

Thanks. Have rung the doc and am waiting for a call back. He's having loose BM's, little and often, and tummy cramps. He says he still feels blocked and his tummy is bloated.

My DS didn't poo for five weeks and got impacted. We took him to the doctor as he had stopped eating (he'd got a history of constipation and had had lactulose in the past which hadn't been very effective). Doctor prescribed the increasing doses of Movicol as you've got and after two days he had two poos that filled the toilet bowl (not any different to 'normal' poo inconsistency) and felt much better afterwards!! It was the volume of it that was the give away that it had cleared. He had a dose of Movicol every day for a year afterwards which kept him 'moving' but he's been ok since then.

Hope your DS clears his blockage soon- it's not nice.

Spoke to doc. He is to finish his 12 sachets today, and we're going to see the doc tomorrow afternoon. More time off school

Doc thinks the impaction has been resolved, and we have to go down to 2 sachets a day for the next two weeks then go back to see him. Poor DS has awful diarrhoea, so no school until we can get that under control. My washing machine is in overdrive.

Your poor ds, it's very stressful isn't it.

As I said before my ds had a massive "release" last time he had some, lots of washing and showers for us then too.

Hopefully things will start to regulate themselves shortly

how old is ds.?

ask for referral to gastroenterologist to investigate further if its been ongoin issue and to have an xray.

try giving him probiotcs daily eg biocare powder they can also help .
