DS fell on his chin

Oh oh. DS is 2, just fell in the park on the hard path, cut his lip and grazed his chin. His teeth aren't wobbly, the cut is quite small and it has stopped bleeding. Anything else I should be worrying about?

A bit of handholding I think I need is all - DH away for a week and DS2 is only 2 months old so I am running all directions.

Is he otherwise fine? I'd just keep an eye on him tonight and call NHS direct if you are worried. I think toddlers are made to be pretty indestructible thank goodness!

Oh dear, poor you, these things always happen when you are on your own.

Injuries like these always look worse than they are but as the previous poster said I would just keep a watchful eye tonight.

Tomorrow it is possible that his chin and lip might be a bit bruised, but it will clear up quickly.

DS will probably be running about again tomorrow - you will want him to be careful so it doesn't happen again but toddlers don't think like us!

If complaining tomorrow, calpol some TLC, keep an eye open for infection, maybe sudocrem or germolene which has local anaesthetic.

I was a bit worried that he seemed quite drowsy a short time afterwards, but I think that might have been the calpol I gave him combined with "coming down" after the fright he had. He threw a few tantrums on the way to bathtime/bedtime which reassured me that he was ok (first time I've been glad to see a tantrum!)

Is it possible that his teeth went right through his lip or am I being overly dramatic? If that had happened there would be a really big gash?

I think I am doubly shaken because the fall in the park was my fault - I was encouraging him to ride on his trolley thing as if it were a skateboard, which it's not designed for. We do it all the time, even though DH has always told me off for it and I've always thought he was such a health-and-safety-killjoy. I am cringing with shame as I write this.

But both boys are sleeping now and not a murmur from them for a while. Nothing wrong with custard for dinner, calpol for everyone and all the chocolate in the fridge for mummy.

I feel so guilty.

I think you'd know about it if his teeth went through his lip. I'd still keep an eye on him tonight and it goes without saying if you think he could have concussion seek medical advice (did he hit his head too?) this page has more info.

Don't feel guilty though! It was an accident and you sound like a lovely mummy. Bit jealous of the custard supper.

Guilt comes neatly wrapped with a baby so its normal, but completely unecessary.

When we assessed facial wounds we looked at the teeth for chips or wobbly teeth. chipped bits of tooth can embed themselves in the inside of the mouth. If there is a wound inside the lower lip provided it is inside the mouth it will heal well. We have wounds that come all the way through to the outside so I guess you are OK there. They do need treating. Obviously there was no head injury or loss of consciousness, nevertheless keep a good eye on him and if you are worried..... vomiting etc headache, get him checked over.

I'm sure his teeth aren't chipped or wobbly, and I was thinking concussion but I think that was just me doing some general panicking at the sight of blood. He just banged his chin nowhere else on his head.

Ah the timing! DS2 all cranky following jabs yesterday, and of course DS1 is liable to throw a tantrum at the sight of me breastfeeding at the best of times. My mum and my best friend are both overseas as well as DH being away. And I was all set up to start moving DS1 into his big boy bed so that DS2 could start getting out of my bed his crib and into the cot.

It is always when everything else is going on that accidents seem to happen, and doubly so when you don't have your usual support system in place.

I think guilt comes with parenthood - along with permanent worry.

So, if anyone is in this situation and looks at this thread... I took DS to the dentist today. He checked out his teeth and the lacerations to his lip and gums, and of course DS is fine, it'll all heal up etc.

I'm so glad I took him to the dentist, it probably wasn't totally necessary but gave me peace of mind when I was all of a dither.

I booked an emergency appointment at a private dentist near me, because the NHS dentist is quite far away and could only see him on Monday anyway. They charged me 20 quid "for the paperwork" which was totally worth it.
