Recovery time for a child after arthoscopy

My DD (11) is going into hospital tomorrow for and arthroscopy on her knee. They will be stitching some tears in her meniscus and having a look around for other damage.

Does anyone have any experience of how long it will be before she can return to school? The doctor was very non-committal, with an 'anywhere from the next day to a few weeks'!! She is adamant she will be back in school the next day (odd child - hates missing school!), but I need to prepare work for if she is not.

I have never been back to work the day after an anaethetic, so am thinking probably Thursday at the earliest?

Any experiences?

I have has 3 arthroscopies when I was school age and never had more than 2 days off school post op that I can remember. Depends on her pain levels really

I was walking fine after mine and hardly any pain, obviously she won't want anyone knocking into her etc but I think if she feels well she will be good to go after a day or two.

Sirzy - thanks for the reply. She has a really high pain threshold (which is partly why we have got to an 'emergency op' situation without her being in any pain!), so maybe she will be. Hopefully she can go back in by Thursday. School being good about her staying in class and having lunch there etc if needed.

Is she primary school or secondary? If secondary I would ask if she can leave lessons 5 minutes early to get to her next class without being caught in the rush.

I had the same done to my knee. The tear was about an inch long. It gets better quickly each day. I was starting a new job so started a week after my op, but after day two I could normally but with a slight limp.

I would also ask for a pass so she can leave lessons 5 mins early.

She is in year 6, so she is one classroom all day and her teacher is happy for her to go back asap and then stay in the same room all day and for lunch.

She is meant to be on a school trip on 2nd July for a week so am hoping she will be ok for that.
