2 month old baby with a cold. [important]

Hi,

my 2 month old DD has a cold. It's not on her chest but involves a sore throat and runny nose. But she has started to also have a little bit of yellowy white phlegm come up from her mouth.

Should I take her to the doctors?
What could the phlegm be if she doesn't have it on her chest?

Thanks for your help.

I think with such a young one always best to see GP..
In the meantime raising the sleeping position a little if poss will help congestion at night. The saline drops that you squirt up the nose are fab, help baby breathe easier.

Meant to say sorry normally green coloured phlem could be a sign of infection coupled with high temp, if young baby is off feeds they can get dehydrated really quickly so that's something to be concerned with.

poor little mite. It's horrible for them when they have cold when they are that little.

it is always fine to take a baby that small to the GP if you are worried - your gut feeling is far more likely to be accurate than a bunch of MNers.

However, if the GP rules out anything more serious and it's just congestion in the nose and throat, there won't be much they can do.

You can get these little suction-bulb things from the chemist which enable you to effectively "blow"(i.e. suck) that blocked nose. A bowl of hot water nearby to make the air steamy can also help.

Hope she's better soon!

thank you.

Will get an appointment tomorrow with GP. I have the saline drops and the aspirator to keep her nose unblocked. Her temperature seems to not be elevated, although her skin feels warm.

She's so good about it though with little complaint. She's eating less at a time but more often, so not too worried. Also gave her some extra cooled boiled water to keep her hydrated.

There is phlegm in her posseting is that normally an indication of an infection then? Am a bit worried.

The phlegm could be snot that she's swallowed. My DS is 5 months and has a horrible cold at the mo (and it's not his first by any means Sad). As much as I'm trying to keep his nose clear, it's like a tap. I can hear him breathing in then swallowing. Then when he's sick there's always phlegm which I'm pretty sure is the snot he's swallowed. It's happened with every cold he has.

It's horrible when they're so young because there's so little you can do but you can't explain to them why they feel so rough. I took DS to the drs when he had his first cold - just to get him checked over. And I'd take him again if I had any worries at all. You can never be too careful because they can't tell us how they feel either.

Hope your DD is better soon.
