Hi all It's fair to say I am a hypochondriac at times particularly regarding my kids so I would appreciate some honest logical advice. Basically my 5 year old had what I thought was a simple viral infection a fortnight ago, he had a day or 2 of a fever, a sore throat, a rash sores on his mouth and a white/ yellow coated tongue, he recovered quickly but I took him to his gp as a precaution mainly due to the rash. His GP said it was a viral infection and to give him calpol. My son appeared fully recovered fairly quickly and went back to school 48 hours later. However this past few days I have noticed peeling on his fingers and when I went on the dreaded Internet just to see if there was any creams to use etc one of the conditions to cause this was Kawasaki disease which if left untreated can cause heart problems. Some of the symptoms such as the rash and the mouth sores were relevant to my son but others such as the red eyes and 5 days of fever weren't. However now that his fingers are peeling within the timeframe of it being this illness,I am wondering whether to go back to the gps. The thing is I don't want to come across as a know it all/ over anxious parent and my husband thinks my son is fine and would appear more ill if this was the case. The peeling fingers are the only symptoms he currently has and he is very well in himself!

It sounds like hand foot and mouth to me. One of the symptoms of that is hand peeling not to mention mouth sores. But if you are worried deffo go to gp.

Go back and get him checked. My ds had atypical KD ( 3 out of 5 symptoms) and now has coronary artery damage because he didn't receive the right treatment.

I think it is probably not KD but i think you need reassurance from your doctor,

Could be scarlet fever. Go back to the doctor and tell them your concerns.

I was also thinking it could be scarlet fever. My5yo ds was thought to have this over Easter weekend, really bad sore throat, very high temp, rash that looked like measles but was quite rough, a bit like sandpaper. His feet peeled about 6 weeks after and I cant remember if it was his fingers or palms which also peeled. I do think you should go back to the gp as both kd and sf can have lasting health implications.

At a recent paediatric appt they were querying the sf diagnosis- I guess wondering about kd.

Good luck.

NK346 sorry about your ds not receiving the correct treatment Sad

Hi there,
my dd2 was suspected of having Kawasaki disease last summer when she had a rash, high temp for 2 weeks, peeling mouth and hands/feet but it was actually a horrible urine infection which because it wasn't treated sufficiently became a kidney infection. She spent her first birthday in hospital and lost so much weight she could barely sit up.
The drs told me they were testing for KD which I had never heard of before.

Go and see your gp tomorrow ,I went back and forth between the gp and the hospital 4 times until finally they found the cause of infection and treated my baby.

Also sorry to hear of your ds NK346 -I hope he is growing stronger.
