Spots on 1 week old - when to worry?

DD is a week old. Yesterday I noticed a spot on her jaw. It has a tiny raised head, and a large area of skin (well, large relative to the spot) was red around it.

Today the raised head is still there, it's only slighly pink just around it now.

However two more have appeared on the other side of her face. They had the redness around them first thing this morning, but now have also calmed down and not noticeable unless you look for them IYSWIM.

Trying to remember if DS got spots like this but it seems so long ago (in reality only 4 years) I just can't remember.

My gut instinct is they're just spots. Perhaps something has irritated her skin? (I didn't get a chance to bathe her yesterday.)

But I thought I'd better check with you wise lot, just in case! Would this worry you? In general, when do you know if you should worry about spots on babies?

My babies got spots as newborns, they'd pop up and go quite quickly.

Newborn acne - very normal and harmless! DS2's cleared up a couple of weeks ago (so when he was about 6 weeks).

Honestly, they start off with perfect skin, then they get the spots, the funky eyes, the cradle cap...

Oh, and don't bathe her every day, that will irritate her skin!

My dds both got them. A quick wipe with cooled boiled water, and throw the cotton wool ball straight away, and use a new bit for each spot (same as you do for their eyes)

Hi there - happened to me too when DD was same age. Well I think so - do they look almost like tiny boils?

I strongly recommend you go to GP.

Do NOT panic when you read this but our GP referred us to hospital and we were admitted immediately. They were concerned that DD might go on to develop a blood infection. We were in for a week and DD was initially given antibiotics via a drip and then orally. Cause of infection was never correctly diagnosed as they lost her test results - twice - but essentially a bacteral infection probably given to us both by the hospital at birth. I then noticed I had a sort of boil thing on inside thight so am guessing midwife infected us.

Hospital faffed around with us before referring us to another (better) hospital where they numbed her, lanced both her spot/boil things and released us same day.

All fine. Was quite nice in hospital - private room, and DD and I had lovely bonding time where I did not have to deal with anything other than her.

Sounds like newborn acne to me.

The spots my newborn got were tiny and wouldn't need lancing in a hospital! I'm guessing you were unlucky ohgood and had something different.

Feel like voice of doom! OP our spots were definitely not the speckling of newborn acne - definitely more like boils.

DD1 had loads of spots when she was born. So many that the midwife sent us to the hospital, who then sent us home again after checking her out.

With one or two, I'd keep an eye but it really does sound like newborn acne.

Ds2 had terrible newborn acne all over but spots were v small, largest had heads the size of pinheads (but numbered in hundreds). If this is what you are describing then I wouldn't worry. Anything that you feel might need lancing (poor you OhGod) then def go to the GP.
