Sudden unexplained bruise behind dd's knee...what could this be? DH wants to take her to a & e as he's worried about her.

I'm guessing it's just a knock she didn't notice, but she is very oversensitive to things like that and would usually shout if she'd hurt herself. Just trying to rule out anything sinister and google chucks up nothing...

she probably stood up too quickly and knocked the chair behind her or something equally as silly. Has she any other symptoms? I wouldn't go to A&E over a bruise but if you are worried get an appointment tomorrow with your GP.

this is what I think headless, DH is panicked because his sister was very I'll with DVT earlier this year.

I get them when I overexert myself, wonky knee joints. I don't usually feel it happening but might feel a bit tender there for a few days after.

Has she been running around a lot today?

Not more than usual but she's a real outdoor girl so she does a klot. She rode today actually...hadn't thought of that, she may have whacked herself jumping, she probably wouldn't notice then! :) ok, thanks both of you, i'll scrape DH off the celing and calm him down!

If she rides the jodphurs could be tight behind her knee, or if it's long boots she wears they can press in and bruise.

Its an unusual place to get a bruise, but not impossible. If you're worried then get her checked out by the gp tomorrow.

I got a ridiculously large and colourful bruise on the back of my knee once after I twisted it. The twist wasn't particularly painful so the massive bruise was a surprise.
I did it skiing... If you're familiar with skiing, I was in snowplough and pushed out too wide at the back.

Short boots Scherezade, and loose Jodhs...but I've nipped my skin in that place myself if my stirrups have been twisted, so maybe that. If she's displaying any unusual signs of soreness tomorrow I'll nip her to the gp.

How old is she? My son got a bruise in the crease of his knee by falling bum first into a bucket whilst helping wash the car. It was spectacular but nothing serious. She may've done something similar knocking it somehow.

I fell on my bum recently, hard, and my tailbone really hurt, still dos, but it was behind my knee that bruised, badly - I don't remember hitting my knee.

If there is no explanation, you should be worried about a bruise that is not over a bony prominence (knee cap, elbow, shin etc) may be worth checking with GP

I once had a huge one when I was little. I had been sitting on a metal bench with and had been swinging my legs vigorously (as you do when you are little). I suppose a swing would do the same thing.

I've had DVT but there was no bruise (slightly swollen leg but not so's you'd notice) and I found it very uncomfortable to put my foot down flat.

Bruises are odd...you either get one and have no idea how, or drop a heavy pan on your foot and get nothing. Has she got other bruises?

I had to dragged to A+E with my DVT ("I'm fine, I can walk, it's nothing, I'll be ok, I'm going to work...") and it was full of people with coughs and colds (there was a nasty flu going around, but still...).

Which is why I was on here, checking it out to reassure him. There was no way I was going to a and e for a bruise. He was just freaked out becAuse of the DVT issue. He is usually a hugely rational man...dd is his Achilles heel! :)

My sil died of meningitis. You should see me panic if mine have headache/ temperature etc. I don't blame you for being worried.

It's quite difficult to bruise the back of a knee. Just saying. That's why it's slightly odd.

I'd watch it and check it's going through the usual yellowing etc and not looking odd over the next few days, and take any reports of pain seriously.

DD had a bruise at the back of her knee after she twisted her knee trampolining a few weeks ago

it's difficult to judge her 'real' pain/injury as she has SPD, so everything is a major concern for her, but the next day she'd forgotten about it - i noticed the bruising when she came out of the bath the day after.

i hope this is the case with your DD, OP, but i can totally understand your concern. a missed injury can cause massive problems later in life

bruising in funny places without memory of a knock is unusual.
if she were mine, id be checking her out for other funny bruising, excessive tiredness, other odd sx and would have a low threshold for taking her to the GP
DVT (particularly in a child) would not be high on my list

I wouldn't go to A&E. there's nothing they can do except go 'yes it is a bruise'. So long as she's walking she's fine. Multiple unexplained bruises in random places are different but a one off is fine. Kids are normally covered in little bruises that no one can remember happening.

She is way too young for a DVT if she's otherwise healthy.
