Missing Testicle and Orchidopexy

I am after some advice please.

My DS, just turned 3 has a missing testicle that was diagnosed at birth. The various Doctors who have had a look in the last 3 years advised a wait and see approach for the first couple of years to see if it came down of its own accord. We were then referred to our local hospital for an ultrasound of the groin and lower abdomen and it was still not visible.

After that we were referred to a large teaching hospital where the Consultant has said that he will perform a Orchidopexy to recover the missing testicle and if possible position in the correct place or remove if appropriate.

My question is this would a further scan to ascertain whether or not there is actually a testicle to recover be better rather than 'going in blind' so to speak. I do appreciate that there is an increased risk of malignancy if there is a testicle in the wrong place but feel uneasy about surgery when a scan or MRI could pinpoint exact wherabouts.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Are you in Britain? My ds was diagnosed with no visible testicle at birth and was operated on to try and find it at 1 year old. No scans at all. It was found and brought down. We were told the earlier the better to get it down. We were also told that if they found testicle it may not be viable but he would be fine with one. No scans and no sign of it through examination so I guess they went in blind....
