Blue sclera in 3 month old
sleepythegiraffe · 06/04/2013 22:34
Looking for some reassurance. Several weeks ago the hv noticed my dd had a blue tint to the white of her eye and advised that i took her to the gp. I took her the next day and the gp admitted she had never seen this before. She looked it up and brittle bone disease was highlighted. She quizzed me on family history and consulted another gp, then referred us to an eye specialist. Dr Google informs me it is common in newborns but the hv or gp both stated they had never seen it before.
Blue eyes aside she is growing, smiling, good muscle tone.
Any ideas? Anyone else have any experience with this?

Thank you for your reply. The internet certainly seems to think it is common, was just perplexed by the professionals lack of experience with it. Will stop googling!!

Hi. When my son was a baby the whites of his eyes on the insides (closer to the nose if you know what I mean) was quite a blue colour and was more obvious when he looked to the outside showing more of the inner side of his eyes. I can't remember when it went away but it must have as he's 13 now and his eyes are white. Don't remember this with my other two so much.
Is it all the white of her eyes?
sleepythegiraffe · 08/04/2013 03:36
All of the white area is blue. It looks worse in some lights but the whole area is unmistakably blue - once you know anyway. Thanks for your reply, glad your sons eyes are ok now.
Anyone else have a baby with blue eyes?

Hi I have a 10 month old baby with downs syndrome I just recently noticed he has blue sclera should I be worried and shat shall I do about it?
Iesugrist · 25/07/2021 13:16
Your baby should have regular eye testing as part of their Down Syndrome follow-up so you can mention it at the next one of those if you are concerned. I don't think it would be linked in a concerning way.

My eyes are blue and I'm quite short sighted. The two things are linked. Once dd is old enough, take her to get her sight checked. You can ask an optician to refer her to an eye hospital early for a test before she can communicate if you are worried.
